Looking to upgrade with o2

My contract is about to expire with o2 after 12 months paying £15 a month for 200 mins and 500 txts.

The best they could offer me was 400 mins and 500 txts for £25 with either a new phone or £100 cashback.

I tried to get them to drop the monthly price for less minutes and txts, because what I have now is fine but they wouldn't budge. Is it worth me giving them another ring and threatening to cancel and can anyone arm me with some better deals to throw at them?

Thanks

    Is it a 12 month contract ?

If so, the £100 cashback takes the net price down to £16.67/month (only a £ or so more than you are paying at the moment).

Also, did you have the choice of any new phone ?

If so, you may be able to get a phone that you can sell on for more than £100, making it a better deal.

    Just a thought.

  • Yes, it is 12 months.

Never thought about selling a new phone on. Is Ebay a good place to sell and which phones are more popular?

Personally, I am not a big fan of O2, but it obviously does what you need or you wouldn't want to stay withthem.

As for selling the phone on Ebay, you also have to consider that to clear more than the £100 cashback you have been offered from O2, you will need to sell the phone for, probably, about £115 as you will have listing fees, final valuation fees and (probably) PayPal fees.

Is it worth the hassle selling the phone when you have been guaranteed £100 cash from O2 ? Any new phone you get from O2 may not even sell for your £115 cut-off, and then you are down on the deal. At least if you took the £100 cash from O2, you know exactly where you stand.

It is one of these risk assessment deals. Guaranteed £100 against a potential £130ish ?

I personally would take the £100 cashback and then you have your deal at £16.67/month (more or less what you are on right now) and no further hassle.

  • Check what phones they will offer and then check these on ebay to see which one sells for the highest price!

If it is more than the 100 quid cashback then go for it.

Also, be careful to compare like with like.

Bear in mind that you will need to sell for over £110 to get any more money.

Also, unlocked phones sell for more than provider specific phones. Will your O2 phone be unlocked to any network. This always helps the price.

Also, if you do sell your new mobile on Ebay, DON'T sell it abroad. Chances are you will end up with no phone and no money.

Stipulate UK only, and don't permit any bids from non UK accounts.

    Good luck.

I'm not sure that should be a hard and fast rule of thumb. I think the guarantee of £100 cash from O2 has got to be worth and extra potential £20 from Ebay.

I would say that if the phone sells for over £120 then fine, go the Ebay route, if less than £120, I would still say you are better off with the guaranteed cash from O2.

  • OK I agree with that but if it is a decent phone it should sell ok. The OP just has to check them all out carefully before making the final decision

I think all phones supplied by O2 on contract are unlocked. Mine always have been.

Yep, I agree with that. But to me, it sounds like the OP is a bit of an Ebay novice, so she (?) should be careful.

    Good luck.

    Thanks all!

KevinM.. why do you not rate o2?

The only reason I was going to stay with them was for conveience really.. daughters on same network etc. I would be happy to leave if there was a better deal around but I haven't managed to find one.
