Talk to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

How does this figure compare with their advertised speed(s) for the package you bought?

It took me 4.5 hours to download a half hour programme not long ago, we area good way from the exchange, that's what I was told the problem was.

    I dont bother now.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

You could ask your ISP which speed test results they prefer, then take the tests every four hours or so for a few days.

Some sites are very slow to download anything from

Don't forget that it's the school summer holidays and they'll be playing on-line games, watching YouTube, online TV, downloading music and other stuff for the next 6 weeks or so.

    As usual, not enough information.
Please answer the following and we may be able to help more
    • PC Operating system.?
    • Wireless or hard wired?
    • Router type (if known)?
    • Is your broadband fibre optic or ADSL?
Virgin Media and BT infinity are fibre optic, the rest are usually ADSL
    • Who is your ISP (broadband provider)
    • Go here and enter your postcode and hit search
On the search results screen go down the options listed under Summary. Particularly Cable or BT ADSL and you should get an estimate of what speed you should get.
Please post the answers (mine are shown below)
    Dave

Copy of My samknows BT ADSL stats:
BT ADSL broadband availability You are connected to the xxxxxx telephone exchange.
    • ADSL is available in your area
    • Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
    • Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL2+ services
According to BT Wholesale, your phone line should be able to support
    up to 0.5Mbps via ADSL
1.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max
    2Mbps or greater via ADSL2+
    Standard ADSL RAG results

    • You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL
    • You cannot receive 1Mbps ADSL
    • You can receive 512kbps ADSL
    • You can receive 256kbps ADSL
However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.

According to BT Wholesale, houses at your postcode should be able to support

You are approximately 0 metres from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!

now, to be properly accurate, you need to log in to your router and post your line stats, i.e. attenuation up/down (in dB) and snrm (in dB) and use the downstream dB figure in here:-

    http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php

which is the most accurate max speed calc out there :)

OP, You missed out the following:
    • PC Operating system.?
    • Wireless or hard wired?
    • Router type (if known)?
    • Is your broadband fibre optic or ADSL?
Virgin Media and BT infinity are fibre optic, the rest are usually ADSL
    • Who is your ISP (broadband provider)
Knowing this will help. From the figures it looks like ADSL, not fibre.

And the stuff Gunjack asked for please ...
