Can I please point out that this was not a cashiers cheque, but a foreign draft

But don't let that get in the way of a bit of bank bashing ;)

Well I was correcting it - because it is something that the branch cannot produce, only order

You have to remember that holding accounts with different banks around the world, to allow these drafts to be issues and collected costs money. That's what you pay for. You may find a "proper" bank could issue it straight away though - I know when I worked at Barclays I used to write these out all the time. That was a couple of years ago, but the charge was only £8.

Don't use one of your own cheques and change £ to $ though. As well as a fee from your own bank, the other bank will where it's paid in will charge for collecting the cheque. They may make you wait several weeks for the money and it may also be converted between £ and $ more than once on the way.

  • Apparently using online brokers is the best way to take money into foreign accounts charging a mere 1% commision and giving you the actual interbank rates, rather then the interbank rates minus 4% like the banks.

.. never done it or needed to do it though
