Halifax charges £15 for a cashiers cheque!

i went to halifax to get a cashiers cheque today, for an investment i have planned but, i needed the cheque in US dollars, for this service the bank was going to charge me £15 which i think is disgusting, they are not willing to waiver the fee, and when asked they said its a charge for converting the money to US dollars and to post out the cheque , i argued the case that it shouldnt cost anything to write out a cheque for me with my money, but they werent intrested, the other thing was that it would take 7 -10 working days. any help off you guys would be great, any advice on were to go to get a free cashiers cheque, thank for reading

If you use your debit card to buy something in a foreign currency there is a charge. Why should a cheque be any different? You could not write yourself a cheque in USD so a charge is levied for this service.
  • The currency of this country is sterling.
If you want to conduct business in another currency which will incur costs for your bank why do you think that they should do this for nothing?

Write out one of your own cheques in USD and wait for them to slap on the fee anyway.

you could just simply write a cheque MAKE sure it is mark with a "$" sign and "dollar" word. I did that last month for a Euro payment with a french company. The bank just charged me £5 comission. (Bank of Scotland)
  • Maybe you could pay by credit card & suffer the 2.75% fee. Or maybe not. £15 seems a reasonable fee in the circumstances for the work involved.

The branch would not have given you what is called a "foreign draft". The branch fills in the form on the computer system for the international banking department to send you the completed draft in the post, - this is what you pay for

it is not the same as getting a banking draft in sterling at the counter, as this comes from the international banking department.

The counter can only produce cheques in sterling

Do Halifax levy a similar charge for counter cheques in Sterling?

    No Kilty, but

They are free from a savings account, and £10 from a current account (if a customer has their own cheque book facility)

    You mean HBOS,

Halifax are still separate in their own right, as are Bank of Scotland, but majority of things are the same

    Thanks.
