The distance PLUS age & condition of your phoneline from the exchange equipment to your Master Socket dictate the speed you will get,When I was at Sky,a speed of as low as 128MBps (iirc) was considered to be broadband. The are other factors that can also affect the speed, but the ones above are the main ones.

    I think you mean 128KBps.

I'd kill for 128MBps, beats the hell out of Virgin's best rate.

When we signed up for sky and, more recently, plusnet they both gave us an estimated speed that were we're more likely to receive. Basically both times advertised speeds were up to 16mbps, but both estimated we'd receive around 5mbps. In both cases that is what we mainly recieved.

I think samknows.co.uk gives you this too.

The age of the line is 5 years old and the distance is just over a mile away

My broadband speed has gone down since my phone line went dead a month ago. BT laid a new underground cable and master socket today, I am 1785 metres from the exchange, I have an Orange Livebox that I have had since 2007. Thinkbroadband Speedtest - Download speed 201.54 kbps Upload 368.38. Ithought my broadband speed would have gone back up after the new cable had been installed.

The faulty cable most probably caused your broadband to be automatically slowed right down to try to cope with noise/interference on the line. Now that you have a new line installed, contact your ISP (Orange?) and tell them that your profile needs to be reset so that you achieve the maximum speed that your line can supply.
