A local school here has a Costa Coffee Bar inside it for all the kids to use. I wondered how common this was please, does your kids school have one?

No! Omg! If there was a Costa Coffee at either of my kids' schools, all the moms would hang out there all day! lol Mind you, one is a nursery school and the other is a prep school.

My second last secondary school had a sort of cafe attached. Nothing so posh though - just standard tuck and boring tea/coffee. My last secondary school was in town so even if there was a cafe (there wasn't - just a tuck shop) it would have been quicker to nip into the normal Costa or McDo's round the corner. ;) Actually, it *was* quicker. I don't think any of us considered staying on school grounds for the sake of a cuppa.
  • I would be seriously concerned about this! My school has a coffee machine but it's for staff and in a staff only area. Sometimes we treat the sixth formers to coffee or tea, but I wouldn't dream of serving coffee to the younger students. Not only is it not a healthy choice for a younger child, it's not really going to help their behavior. At one point we had a fizzy drinks machine on site (our site has a public gym) but that was on a timer so the school children could not access it during the day.

In the cafeteria there is only water, fruit juice and squash available to pupils, there was outrage when a member of staff brought her exam group energy drinks.

I work in a secondary school:
fizzy drinks are not sold in school just fruit juice drinks, "milkshakes" (full of sugar!) and still drinks. Water fountains are all over the building for students. No coffee for students either - there is a Klix-type coffee machine in the staff room & kitchenettes available for staff to make tea/coffee.
I wouldn't welcome a Costa outlet in school - they serve paninis etc at break/lunch

From what I can see on this thread mrs_sparrow says it's available to all students in a secondary school. That's younger students than sixth form to me.

Having Googled it seems those stands in schools are selling at a reduced price to students as there is no VAT charged to the kids. I found this for Highams Park School - it says it's for 6th formers only here but the prices are much less: http://www.highamsparkschool.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=140&Itemid=464

    It says:

The Costa Coffee bar is open for 6th form students and staff throughout the day. The student prices are shown below. Adults pay slightly more because of VAT rules.

Just for sixth formers - so the same as you'd find in an FE college.
  • I didn't think that referred to the school the OP was talking about but I stand corrected.

Chartwells who do lot of the school catering contracts have a contract with cost - they do the catering at the FE college where I work and there is a costa with slightly reduced prices. I wouldn't want one in a high school though!
