A local school does have a Costa, but it is because the local public library is onsite, and leisure facilities are used by the public outside of school hours too. There is a sign saying that school children are not served during the school day. Are you sure that you have not misunderstood their intentions?

Another one that's been reminded of the Klix machines here. I used to love the weird-tasting orange squash... until you got to the powder lumps at the bottom lol.

    Is it an Academy?

No. Just a state secondary school.

No, it's for the kids, there is nothing on site that is for access by anyone else. I questioned my friend about it in the same way and she said no, it's for the students and teachers.

We are ruled by industry. Everything's an opportunity to make money these days, even at the expense of filling a bunch of teenagers full of stimulants.

    Serioulsy? That's outrageous!

We had 10p coffee machines when I was at school and the school still have similar now but it's 50p, but Costa Coffee? How many parents are in a position to be paying for their children to buy coffee there every day? I presume they're not selling it at a reduced rate so as not to fleece the kids too much.

I missed this - that was my question to my friend, who on earth is going to be giving their kids that much money to spend on coffee each day anyway!!

Having Googled it seems those stands in schools are selling at a reduced price to students as there is no VAT charged to the kids. I found this for Highams Park School - it says it's for 6th formers only here but the prices are much less: http://www.highamsparkschool.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=140&Itemid=464

    It says:

The Costa Coffee bar is open for 6th form students and staff throughout the day. The student prices are shown below. Adults pay slightly more because of VAT rules.

Another question - at what age does a 6th former become an adult and so has to pay VAT on their coffee??

My brother had a nice little earner going queuing in the scrum for the tuckshop and then flogging stuff on for 100% markup to the kids who couldn't be bothered to queue. Sadly for him, when he got busted by the teachers, his notebook where he'd kept detailed accounts of outgoings and profits (sad child my brother) was a nice spot of evidence against him.

I'd love a Costa bar... for the teachers - I ain't coherent till cup of coffee number 3 on a morning!

:rotfl:Classic! Has he carried on with his entrepreneurial spirit?

Is it just an espresso machine that grinds Costa beans, or are we talking a staffed franchise? I don't see too much of a problem with the former.

Edit : Just saw your link. Drinks are a standard £1 at DS's school so I think it looks fair to me. If they were serving blended drinks and paninis and kids were wanting to spend £7 a pop then I could see it would be an issue.

Coffee in a kids school that's madness! There is no way that should be allowed. Kids have enough caffeine in their diets as it is - and the DONT need any more.
