Any piece of software that hogs a cpu that much, can't be well written.

alt.binz the software, or inside firefox? If the latter, try the same thing in IE in inprivate mode, which stops addins running

Video conversion is heavy on cpu, but shouldn't slow a pc to a crawl. What software are you using to convert, from what format to what, and how big are the files?

It's not really tweaking, but being more selective on what 3rd party software is added - a bad piece of software can have the same effect on new hardware.

Run chkdsk on the c: drive to check for errors

Nokia drivers are one example, people get a new phone then install software that is invariably not needed at all, when all it is used for is to transfer files, which a lot of nokia phones can do without extra software, using inbuilt mass media windows drivers.

Surely if the PC has to be dropped down to basics and everything you use installed, services tweaked etc to get it to run smoothly it's time for an upgrade?

flawed logic - what closed means is that those processes are running when the machine is idle, not only when you ask for them to run (by opening the program). And HD video can be double or triple the filesize for the same length SD clip/movie, so it will take longer/more cpu as the files are so much bigger, and the processing required is more, also the format being converted to can have a big impact.

Looks like you're on day 3, soon to be day 4.

To be honest I would not reformat my pc, as I classify myself as a techie and a fiddler. However, 95% of the people are not, and life's too short.

Check the memory size http://www.memtest.org/, check the hard disk using the non destructive test and download from the manufacturer, back the disk up using clonezilla or http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm/ or http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx or another bit of s/w you know how to use, to a usb disk.

Then make sure you have the windows installation cd, latest video card driver files, a second copy of all your data and emails, then wipe

yes, will take about 3 hours to reinstall sparingly, and is nowhere near as satisfying as fixing it yourself.

on the otherside, notice lots of file missing, so Start, Run, type sfc /scannow
Probably will not make your machine run any quicker.

On my PC (seems to be ok on a friends) O23 - Service: Bonjour Service - Apple Inc. - C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe makes my PC run as fast as a snail

more stuff to fiddle around with: procexp (process explorer) and filemon (file monitor)

End f the day, just test, wipe and be done with it, but make sure you can get your stuff back first! you will know exactly were you stand.

I would say it is most likely your larger videos and having them HD now - if converting video even with new machine, if it is HD it will take time and other processes will be slow to respond.

I was going to say if it's AVCHD the OP is working with I'd look at upgrading the processor as I find even my 3Ghz C2D machines are slow with the video format whereas the i7 machines give a substantial boost in speed.
