No, but ccleaner clears the crap out.
I use mse anti virus and one of the free firewalls which for some reason the name has escaped me.
I have tried turning off the internet, but it doesn't speed anything up.Sigless0 -
both of those could slow things down - avast and windows firewall if you want a faster machine.!!

you really don't need to reformat again, seriously, it'll take maybe an hour to run through the sticky - way less than another re-install and all the associated updates.
As for not tweaking the OS down, I've got an XP Pro machine running 16 processes at idle...it's very much lower spec than yours, with 512meg RAM, and it buzzes along nicely
We're trying to help you, honestly. As closed points out, the only thing that's slowing it down is the software you've got on it...sort that and you'll be pleasantly surprised......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Good Idea!
I did not think that disconnecting the internet would speed up your PC, but with no a/v would be a prudent thing to do.
Even if you do not install stuff, all the updates, expanding virtual memory expanding mft and registry, all contribute to slowness eventually.
I you know who manufactured the hdd, you could always go to their site and get a free disk checker progam.0 -
It's windows 7, I'll reformat and install from fresh, all the important files are on an external drive.Sigless0

Okay read through the sticky.
Already have ccleaner, run it weekly, same with maleware bites, do a full scan every Sunday night.
using MSE not avast 7, how much quicker is avast?
Don 't have any tool bars, defraggers, or security software besides already stated (mse, maleware bytes and online armour firewall).
Startuplite found no unnecessary startups.
Cant find the needed settings to disable ctfmon
All bar one of the mentioned services were disabled, that's not disabled. Have also uninstalled online armour.Sigless0 -
Before formatting, immediately after the next reboot, open Task Manager, select the Processes tab and let us know how many processes are running.
Too many processes running at startup will slow the operating system down. Processes running are normally associated with the number of programs set to run automatically with Windows.
How much RAM is installed?
What size hard drive and how much free space is available?
Is Windows set to manage virtual memory?0
