The struggle with multitasking comment suggests swapping or cpu hog somewhere - what is running when this happens?

Trying avast takes about 5 minutes, if you do, dont install chrome during installation.

Is this a home built or reseller machine, or a well known brand that came with W7 preinstalled?

Converting video is cpu intensive, the cpu shouldn't slow down over time, has anything changed in what you are doing or is it a perception?

Your described behaviour is also consistent with a loss of memory.
First check that the OS is finding all the memory that you believe you have installed. It is rare (but not unknown) for memory to fail, but more commonly you can get poor contacts on the SIMM/DIMMs also causing failure. In which case try removing and reseating the memory.

from some side-by-side trials I did on the same pc, mse is a lot slower than avast, and avast has better detections, so the switch is all positive

and remember to turn on windows firewall now you've uninstalled the other.....

It had 4gig of ram. Max the motherboard can take. HDD is 160gig and had plenty of space as I don't put anything on it besides windows.

Will swap to avast today and get a hijack this log posted.

Is it really bloat wear if I use it?

Always used firefox, I know it is a bit of a memory hog but every time I've used another browser (opera, chrome, IE) I've not liked them as much as firefox.

Right now I have iTunes open and alt.binz and the CPU is is 98%. Everything is lagging.

Both were using 40%+ each.

Adblock plus and the robo form plugin.

Surely if the PC has to be dropped down to basics and everything you use installed, services tweaked etc to get it to run smoothly it's time for an upgrade?

If I'm converting video you can't do anything else at al till its done. When it first got it it was fine. Maybe it's because the videos are bigger, HD not SD now etc. I have no idea.
