Dodgy Morphy Richards Kettle

I have a Morphy Richards Kettle - one of the 'accent' range which are different colours. After less than a year it has developed bad corrosion where the handle joins the kettle so I contacted Morphy Richards to inform them. They claim that they will not cover the warranty as they say it is caused by limescale and that we have not cleaned it. We have indeed cleaned it and you would have thought that a kettle would last longer than 11 months before sustaining damage. Any thoughts and has anyone else had this problem?

If it's less than a year old just go back to the retailer, it is up to them to deal with it not the manufacturer.

I've never had a kettle last less than five years and I never clean them, but I'm in a very soft water area.

We have had our accents kettle a tad over 2 years, its going rusty , paint is chipping off everywhere, its also leaking around te handle join and fuel gage , it was also very noisy

told the wife we are not buying an expensive kettle again

chucked it in the bin and got a £13 kettle from Argos same colour http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4237226/Trail/searchtext%3EKETTTLE.htm

    Seems better build quality too

My Mum had to get rid of hers as the lid practically stuck shut, and it started leaking where the water gauge was. We have soft water (in fact my last kettle was 10 years old and hadn't any limescale at all) so it can't be the hard water and not cleaning it. My sister's one went the same way. My son also has one and I think the only reason he's still got it is because he very rarely uses it.

I saved up to buy the triangular one in red, it was 49.99. Within 4 months it was flaking and falling apart but after 7 months everytime it was picked up to be poured you got burnt from the steam. The kettle was very well looked after too. I did email them but they never bothered to reply. Having always bought from them I will never use them again :(
  • I am REALLY interested in your experience of Morphy Richards and their attitude to customer complaints, as I'm having a lively debate with them at the moment...

We've got a Morphy Richards breadmaker which was a wedding present so is now 10 years old. The breadpan started losing its non stick coating last year and the silver lining was making grey and black streaks in the bread dough. I got a replacement breadpan online direct from Morphy Richards at the end of November last year, for a total of £20.86.

I use it probably once a week or every two weeks, depending, so not a huge amount of use in eight months. Anyhow, the same thing has happened again, black dirty streaks in the dough and a bare space in the breadpan lining where all the non stick has come off.

Contacted MR, who first said they needed proof of purchase and that I could ask my retailer for a copy of the receipt. I told them I got it off them and so they should have proof of purchase. Suddenly I got the reply that their guarantee was only for 6 months so my product wasn't covered.

I responded by citing my rights under the Sale of Goods Act, and that 8 months use from a product isn't really reasonable.

They have responded by saying they are sorry but according to their Quality Assurance people there isn't any major issue with the breadpan and they endeavour to ensure the highest quality in their products, blah blah. But they aren't going to help.

I spoke to the Citizens Advice Bureau today and they said to go back and push the fact that the manufacturers guarantee has nothing to do with my statutory rights under SoGA. So I have. It's not even about the money, it just really annoys me that the product has developed the same fault twice and that they really don't give a stuff about it. Seems wrong to me. So will wait and see what happens.

Thanks for the comment. Annoyingly I bought it a long way from where I live so I thought that MR would be the best bet - being a reputable company and all that.

Interesting - mine has an issue where the water gauge meets the handle.

They seem to be trying to avoid responsibility for mine - interesting that you have had the same experience.

You would have thought that as a 'premium' brand they would want to make sure that they kept their customers happy. To add insult to injury they have offered me a replacement for £39.99 - direct from them - when I can buy it cheaper in the shops - how does that work??????
