  • When I was living away from my boyfriend with a newborn baby and being a student I didn't have very much money so i budgeted a pound a day for food (for just me not the baby she was on formula)

It was actually so surprising how much you could eat for just that little amount a day!
Lidl aldi Iceland and asda are ones to go to!

    BREAKFAST
A cheap big box of cereal- 0.99
    2 pints of milk- £1
= £2 and thats breakfast for a week!

    LUNCH
    bag of rice grains- £1
    Tin of peas- 20p
Tesco everyday value cooking bacon- 80p
Boil the rice and peas, chop up the cooking bacon (lovely for cheap stuff!) then put all in a frying pan cook until the bacon is cooked then season (i wont add seasoning stuff to the amount as they last ages)
That is lunch for a week for £2!(you might need to buy an extra bag of rice depending how much you eat)

    DINNER
Obviously you won't want the same thing every single week so mix and match it

Tesco every day value small potatoes-60p
Iceland 4 chicken and mushroom pies- 1.50
    Iceland 4 steak pies- 1.50
    Peas- 20p
    =3.80

80p over budget but i think this is good!!

    Other breakfast idea's

Tesco every day crumpets 12 pac X2- 1.40
    Cheapy butter- 60p
    =£2

tesco every day value cooking bacon (lasts ages!!)- 80p
2 loafs of every day value sliced bread- 50p each = £1
You have bacon sandwiches for a week for £1.80 the whole week!

15 every day value eggs- 1.34
tesco every day value cooked ham 60p
    - Omelette each day for 1.94 a week

2 loads of tesco value bread- 50p each = £1
1 tin of value jam- 30p
    OR
    Lemon curd 22p
    OR
    Value cream cheese- 40p
toast for a week for under 1.50
(could also have this as lunch option with out toasting bread)
    Other Lunch options

Bag of ready made salad- £1
    Tesco value mayo- 35p
    1.35p salad

    Tesco flavoured instant noodles- 15p x14 = 2.10

Tesco every day cooking chips- 90p
    Value cheese- 1.24
    Cheesy chips- 2.14!

Tesco cream crakers X2= 50p for 2 packs
    Value cream cheese- 40p
    tea bag 80 pack- 26p
    = £1.66

Tesco value cup of soup serves 4- 20p in order to feed 2 for a week buy 4 boxes = 80p
    Tesco value bread- 50p
    Tesco digestives- 40p
Slice of bread and cuppa soup and a chocolate treat= 1.70

    Dinner Options

    Iceland crinkle cut chips- £1.00
    Value fish fingers- 60p for 12 X3 = 1.80
    Every day value sweetcorn- 30p
    Every day value peas- 30p
    =3.40

    Tesco value 8 sausages= 56p x2= £1.12
    Iceland crinkle cut chips- £1.00
    Tesco value cooking bacon- 80p
OR replace eggs with sausages (same price ish)
    =2.92

    Tesco 8 breaded chicken burgers- £1 X2 =2
    Bag of salad- £1
    =£3

    Value 6 pitta breads- 22p x3 = 66p
bbq sauce (will last more than a week though)- £1.00
    Asda chicken breast chunks- 2.00
    Sweetcorn- 30p
    Small potatoes- 60p
(this meal is a little more expensive and chicken may not last all week but it is deffo worth it at 4.67)
Fry the chicken and then mix in a bowl with the bbq sauce and sweetcorn put inside the pitta, then cut the potatoes up to make homeade wedges!!!!

    Hope ive helped x

Jackel, I am not a cook but I made your tea loaf today and it turned out well. Do you have a similar recipe for wheaten loaf....using cups as a measure?
    Many thanks Sylvia

Hi Sylvia - Glad your loaf turned out ok. Sorry I really am NOT a cake type cook, just make this one so that DH has something to cut at(I have a slice occasionally too) so I don't have another recipe. jac xx.

The best tip for cheap food is shop after 9:00 pm. Most supermarkets sell of stuff dead cheap. I have had a chicken for 10p and loaves of bread for 2p
