Thats a great plan, and if you got pasata instead you could save a few more pennies.
I recently did a meal plan an dummy shop to see if we could all live off £100 a month for the 5 of us, i found it very do able with lots of meat, fruit and milk, i think £25 a week is pretty good and i'm determined to stick to it after a few months of £50 months while i run my stocks down abit.DEC GC £463.67/£450

Funny that you say about ASDA, I tried a comparison at Asda and was surprised that it was more expensive on lots of things. I also found that stuff had gone up in price in just one week when doing the Tesco price list, so I think you'd need to be very canny to keep costs down.0 -
Hi everyone I am relatively new here and this is one of my first posts and would just like to thank people for all their lists/ideas and menu's to help keep costs down. I am currently unemployed and am finding it hard not to overspend. This thread has been really helpful with that.
Thanks again xx0 -

Passata and tomato puree seem to be far better value than tinned tomatoes. Tinned toms are approx. 65% toms and the remainder is tomato juice. I recently looked at the comparative calorie and nutrition panels to work out which one might be providing more tomato per penny (so to speak although this is a very rough and ready way of calculating this).
Tomato puree approx £2.05kg
Typical Values 100g contain
Energy 390kJ (95kcal)
Protein 4.8g
Carbohydrate 18.1g
Sugars 18.1g
Fibre 2.5g
Sodium* 0.2g
Passata approx £0.58kg (made up to calorie/nutrition content of puree, it's approx £1.74)
Nutrition
Typical Values 100g (3½oz) provide
Energy 135kJ (32kcal)
Protein 1.1g
Carbohydrate 6.4g
Sugars 6.0g
Fibre 1.0g
Sodium* 0.2g
Tinned tomatoes £0.78kg (or £4.12 made up to match calories/nutrition of puree and assuming Smartprice or similar tinned toms with no deals for multiple buys)
Nutrition
Typical Values 100g contain
Energy 77kJ (18kcal)
Protein 1.0g
Carbohydrate 3.0g
Sugars 2.8g
Fibre 0.7g
Sodium* trace
I wish I could have found some nutrition information that included vitamin C. However, it did make me wonder if I've been buying tinned tomatoes, assuming that they were better value (both financially and nutritionally) than passata or puree but that really isn't the case any longer.
Tinned tomatoes are good for the texture but for many other purposes you'd probably be better off with passata as Quintwins recommends.August grocery challenge: £8.65/£300

I tend to use passata more than tinned toms 'cos DH doesn't like the "bits" in chopped toms and I can't be bothered to pick out the tomatoe cores.
