Re menu plans and meal ideas
Dear all,
Please feel free to disagree with, confute, contradict or correct anything I post. They are not intended to be taken word for word and I see this as a valuable part of the discussion process that gives people helpful ideas.
I do however have a couple of requests. Can you please justify what you are suggesting with hard facts and also can you state any assumptions (like how you cost things for example) so other readers can see if they are comparing like for like. This way people can make their own informed choices on a level playing field.
Well put, Debby!
Although I'm only a lurker on this thread, can I add that the above applies to every one of my posts on MSE too."Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'
It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it - that’s what gets results!

i thought i'd post a mushroom soup recipe since after mentioning it yesterday i just made it
1/2 punnet of value mushrooms 45p
an onion 12p
packet of value philly 50p
sprinkle garlic salt and pepper 5p
total £1.12 per person 28p
this acually makes loads but i like mine thick so it will do the 4 of us lunch plus one for the freezer
dice onions and mushrooms, fry in a knob of butter (oops i forgot to add that assume 5p you can use value marge) add garlic salt, pepper and some water once they start to soften, add tub of philly and keep adding water and stirring til it's the consistancy you want.DEC GC £463.67/£450

Well, hasn't this thread just taken off!!
I want to say thank you to all the posters on here for all your imput, I have copied and pasted about 10 pages of recipes for myself, DH and our lovely friend who is seriously skint
I won't be following a full £7 for a week menu, mainly because I don't eat meat and DH does, so I have no chance of doing it for £7. However, lots and lots of the recipes are fab just for giving me ideas for things I've never thought of making :T
Thank you again to one and all, you probably don't know just how useful your advise and words are to people really struggling. I understand it's technically not healthy (not starting that argument again :rotfl:), but healthy wasn't the point. EATING was the point. What can I EAT for £7? Can it even be done? Of course the op has now found that the kindness and generosity from other people has massively helped her out, not just from on here, but from friends and family donating food.
:TCan't think of anything smart to put here...1 -
Softstuff thanks for that, alas no room for your wonderful cake/bun/bicuits recipes.......but its certainly eatable and could be lived on
My hubby is like yours if I serve meat and he can see it, it must be a decent size but if hidden away and he is told its say beef stew he happily eats it.
What I have been doing past year is when I get meat (only buy ys nowadays) I bring it home and portion it -usually its around 400g total weight so I will split it into 4 portions for 4 meals. I will rarely leave it whole for a meal for one night, no matter what type it is. Same with lamb (diced/steaks/joint) all gets portioned up. The other week though I got 4 packs of frying steak for YS £1.50 each so I did keep two packs whole ( although I always repackage everything like fish or meat as the containers they come in (unless the are reduced from fresh meat and fish counter as lamb chops were last night) as that packaging takes up so much space in freezer and its amazing how much more you can pack in if they all go into freezer bags
It gets the old brain cells working to produce different types of meals with so little meat that are not all the same, but does mean I can pull off a meat meal for two for maybe 75p including veg.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch
