Just got iphone how safe is it to give credit card details to itunes

Hi I have never used an iphone or itunes before and I want to start getting some aps for my phone. I have set up an itunes account but before I can download anything (for free) I have to verify my account details and also give them a credit or debit card number. Can I register my card details and then delete them? Is it safe to do so, I am guessing people must do it, but I am a bit wary.
Some advice please?

Thanks

There have been news stories where itunes has been hacked, can you not purchase a voucher and use that?

There is a way of setting up an iTunes account without giving a credit card number. Using the iTunes PC application, try to buy a free app and it will then invite you to set up an iTunes account. Then when it asks you for the card type, select no card. You won't be able to buy any chargeable apps, but you don't have to give a card number.

I agree with this, just purchase an iTunes voucher in your local supermarket and redeem it :j

DO NOT REGISTER your credit/debit card number with iTunes. Too dangerous. I have been doing online shopping for 10 years, iTunes remained the only place I got fraud on, and that was just registering the account.

I've never had a problem with it, nor has anyone else I know who uses iTunes (which is a lot of people).

Niether have I, but I do recall a big news article a few years back, where folks CC and DCs had many unauthorised transactions after the itunes portal security was hacked.

One need to be careful when using card and online. If not sure use pre paid card.
Hacks happen to all companies Sony website for Ps, banks, even the card companies them self have beef hacked leading to unauthorised transaction.
If you search google checkout fraud you will see many reported problems.
