They're turning the Copper Box into flats are they?

    What a load of rubbish.

I'm a bit late coming to this thread, but you make a good point re the Copper Box, as it is being turned into a local community facility after the games:

In terms of the other venues, which also clearly won't be turned into housing:

The basketball arena, is a temporary facility. Rumours are that it will be sold to Brazil for the Rio Olympics:
    http://www.london2012.com/venue/basketball-arena/

The aquatics centre will have the temporary seating at the sides removed and be turned into a community and elite swimming facility:
    http://www.london2012.com/venue/aquatics-centre/

The BMX track will be made suitable for riders of all ages and the temporary seating removed:
    http://www.london2012.com/venue/bmx-track/

The International Broadcast Centre has been designed to be as flexible as possible and will be looking for business owners after the games. A list of potential tenants has already been compiled:

The stadium may have its upper tier removed, reducing capacity to c25,000. It will remain in public ownership, will retain the running track (hooray) and will host the world athletics championships in 2015 (may be of interest for people who didn't get tickets):

The Olympic Village will be turned into over 2,800 homes, plus school and health facilities:
    http://www.london2012.com/venue/olympic-village/

The Riverbank Arena will be moved after the games to Leyton and will be scaled down from 15,000 to 5,000 seats and become a training facility:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverbank_Arena

The Velodrome will continue to function as a velodrome after the games as a facility for local and elite riders. The post-Rio world champs are due to be held there:
    http://www.london2012.com/venue/velodrome/

The Water Polo arena: this is a temporary structure. The seating was hired and will be returned to its owners and parts will be used elsewhere after the games:
    http://www.london2012.com/venue/water-polo-arena/

Outside of the park, the temporary structures at Royal Artillery Barracks, Grenwich Park and Horse Guards will be returned to their original use. New uses will be sought for the RAB structure. Outside of London, the white water course at Lee Valley will be in public ownership for use for leisure and competition.

In short, alternative uses have been proposed for all of the Olympic venues and only time will tell whether this works, however there is nothing to suggest we'll have another Athens on our hands.

It was an old nuclear test site as well. I would not want to live there for that reason alone.

Yes, we were testing nuclear weapons in east London.
