Diamond Ring Con! What do I do??

I purchased a diamond engagement ring at the jewllers in my local town of Nottingham back in September 2010.
When I purchased it I knew very little about diamonds and my girlfriend had pointed out the one she wanted, so I went to get it. In the shop the woman very nice and explained the criteria for diamonds, colour, clarity etc. I asked the obvious question, what would my ring fall under. she stated "it will be most probably be between SI1 and SI2,most of our rings are"
Being stupid I was happy with the reply and shelled out 4k for the 1.25k ring. I have to say, it does look the part. It took a while to get round to valuing it as I proposed in Jan 2011 and took it in Feb 2011. It was sent away and came back, the grading for the diamond was I1. Basically the grade down from SI2. I was very disappointed and expressed my displeasure with the shop, who came up with every excuse under the sun.
I was told things like " we dont know the exact spec until its sent away to be valued" and " its been valued at 6.5k therefore it is good value for money" I have to say again work was busy so I fought for a bit then gave up. There was talk of changing the diamond to SI2, but when they looked into it, it was too expensive, so they did nothing and I left it.
Its took me until know to actually realise how stupid I was t get fobbed off. I am now thnking I was took for a ride:
How can they not know the spec of the ring, they brought it! They must of had details of the stone but they didnt tell me, They gave me the vauge answer of "its probably between this and this" why didnt they check? They have purchased the dismond, they must know its clarity to be able to price it!
The other comment, about insurance. Valued at 6.5k yesand in their words "this represents great value for money" I have since found out insurance valuations are very highly inflated meaning it an insurance valuation does not really reflect a retail price.
So my questions are:
What are my rights now. Has too much time elapsed? Or can I still persue?
What services can I use to get the outcome I want (I want to stone changed to SI2 as origionly promised)?
Where can I go for help?
Any answers will be highly appriciated
Thanks

he lady said it was between S11 and S12, you got an S11, so I dont see anything to complain about to be honest.
You said 12 was originally promised, it wasnt, it was between 11 and 12, nothing was promised.
You are going to get now where,
This is the ring your fiance wanted, It sounds like a bobby dazzler.
And, as you said, it looks the part.
If you are bothered insurance price wise, ask for a normal valuation, tell them it is not for insurance purposes.
I would just move on if I was you.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Move on, the shop didn't mislead you, the onus isn't on them to tell you everything about the ring.
If it was as described, and suitable you have no comeback.
You can do two things, fight and loose and become bitter about the ring.
Two, chalk it up to experience and stop placing financial value on a thing that is meant to have sentimental value.0 -
Nearly 2 years later? no chance, sorry.Thinking critically since 1996....0

Be happy with it, stop being so negative.
Bet your fiance loves it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Yes, that's the way it often works. Boy meets girl. Boy ends up in jewellers spending a wad of cash. The point is however, it's the girl that matters, and not the jewellery. If you've still got the girl, and she's happy with the ring, who cares what S number it is. If you haven't got the girl any more, but have in some way regained possession of the ring, be thankful for that stroke of luck and move on.0 -
You should have had it certified at the time, nothing to be done now.0

So you didn't buy a certified diamond. If you had you would have known the grade before purchase and you would have paid a lot more than you did.
As long as they didn't sell it to you as certified you have no come back. You asked what you would be getting for your off the peg diamond, she gave you an indication which is in no way a guarantee of the grade you would get.
Next time, if the diamond grade is so important to you, buy the diamond you want first then have it set in the mount you want.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
The 'value' of anything is what someone will pay for it. Diamonds have very little intrinsic/material value beyond what DeBeers have managed to architect through market dominance. They are cheap enough to use in drill bits (at lower optical qualities of course), materially they have some engineering value, but are just fancy carbon.0

Learn the lesson, move on and be glad that your fiance likes the ring.
In future you may wish to consider doing a bit of research before making such a big purchase or just not at all. Once the purchase has been made (and two years has gone by!!!) is a bit late and finding something negative out will only frustrate you as there's sod all you can do about it.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0
