    he lady said it was between S11 and S12, you got an S11, so I dont see anything to complain about to be honest.

    You said 12 was originally promised, it wasnt, it was between 11 and 12, nothing was promised.

    The way I read it, the SA said their diamonds were usually 'between SI1 & SI2'.

    The OP's diamond was actually I1 - which is of a lesser clarity than SI.
    SI = Slightly Included
    I = Included

    But I do agree with everybody else - nothing to be done.

    It's not a con either, as the OP's title suggests.

    TBH, if you were paying £4K for a diamond ring, you really should have done more research about diamonds before setting foot in a shop.

    If you carry on with this 'I'm not happy about the diamond clarity' you run the risk of your fiancee/wife deciding she doesn't like the ring - and that would be a waste of £4K.

    I would never buy a diamond new or from a high street jeweller.

    Be happy with it, stop being so negative.
    Yes, but the OP has paid 3 times the price for it. Its not unusual for people to spend thousands on engagement rings - a friend recently spent £12k for his intended and was happy to, but I really hope she likes it! - but what's wrong with expecting value for money?

    Having said that it is a bit late to be asking questions now.

    I wouldn't say I would rule out buying a new diamond but I would never buy a diamond that was already set.
    I'd want to look at the whole diamond before it was set.
    I wouldn't buy from a high street jeweller either.

    But, some people are funny about engagement rings, they don't want second hand.
    My first engagement ring was second hand and my then partner wasn't happy about the idea but I said it was that one or none.

    If the OP had done some research, he'd have probably realised that he would get a better deal from somewhere like the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham.

    .

    That's what I meant either a stone or an antique/second hand ring (if you are lucky to find one that fits), if whoever I intended to buy it for wasn't keen on second hand then that soon sorted out the relationship :).

    (Long long time since I bought one :( )

    It should have been certified at POS, and certainly not 2 years on.

    Something that should have been made clear at the time, is that grading is an art, not a science.

    OH's engagement ring was graded as VVS1 by one specialist, however was graded as IF by the bank when we insured it, thus making it worth about double what I paid for it in this case, on paper.

    This was done by the same jewellers.
