I don't think detector vans could ever detect; weren't they just fakes?
But nobody seems to have mentioned hand-held signal detectors....

You could detect the local oscillator in a TV set but getting sufficient directional accuracy to pinpoint one house rather than the one next door just won't happen.

I have always considered that detector vans are for the most part fakes and they simply rely on a list of addresses with no licence. Once at the address listening and/or peeking through the windows would be more effective than using radio detection methods.

You don't need to prove anything.

The proving is down to them.
    when the detector van arrives!

Can keep video & DVD players regardless though

Yes, and you can keep the TVs, into which you can plug said video & DVD players.

If these are also ignored, a licensing officer may visit the premises.

And you can ignore him/her, just as you ignored the letters.

Last time I looked you don't have to prove your innocence. This underpins UK law! It's up to Capita to prove that you are watching live TV.
You can make this more difficult for theb by de-tuning your TV (pull out aerial and autotune the tv.) Permanently disconnecting the aerial will also help.
You don't need to do any of that.

You just need to ignore any letters received and ignore anyone who might turn up on the doorstep.

They have no right of entry so if Capita do arrive on your doorstep just politely tell them that you do not converse with uninvited strangers on your doorstep and close the door on them.

Don't write to them. Don't discuss anything with them. Don't invite them in. Don't let them bluff getting in.

Can I stop paying my TV licence?
    From the horses' mouth:

Asking here won't get you a more accurate answer.:D
  • Sorry for butting in on this thread but it's still tv/licence related...

Ok. Basically to avoid detection you unplug the aerial and de-tune your tv. The switchover to digital - what way does that work? Is it still a case of detaching and de-tuning or is there something else?

Sorry if I'm asking a really obvious question...!!

If you've unplugged your aerial, it makes no difference whether your area has switched over to digital or not. You won't be able to receive live broadcasts.
