Olive Oil - twice a day, from a pipette (buy from chemists). This loosens the wax and eventually it comes out of its own accord. My surgery will not syringe ears at all everyone gets told to use olive oil now as they believe that syringing damages your ear canal.

I'm not a big fan of ear syringing -can cause probs with ear drum, temporary dizziness, and can cause infection in the outer ear canal.

Me either, I'll swear all the messing with his ears causes my OH's problems. I've never put anything in mine, olive oil, cotton buds etc. The extent of my ear care is to wipe them with my finger in the towel when I get out of the shower. I've never had an ear infection or build up of wax etc in my life.

OH insists on tipping warm olive oil in, cleaning them out with cotton buds and the like. He's tried sprays, drops, you name it he's used it. He seems to have his ears syringed by the nurse every year and has at least one ear infection over the winter months. I have told him to just leave alone but he wont.

Definitely this. You can buy your own syringe and flush it gently with warm water after doing this for a week.

I thought the ear wax from candles was a myth and it was the residue from the candles themselves that fools you into thinking it's ear wax.
  • I use Earex, bunged with cotton wool. One ear at a time and lay that side for most of the night. Normally deplugged in two nights, each ear. Other advice is to dry your lugs after washing etc, with tip of towels.

Also, my surgery will not syringe

Went to docs today to get my ears checked. Been having trouble hearing for the past week. Confirmed I had blocked wax as suspected (ear drops have done nothing for me) and arranged to see the nurse to get them syringed.

    No problems there.

Upon making an appointment with the nurse (bearing in mind this is a small town) I have to wait until Aug 1st. That's not this wednesday but the following wednesday. So gonna be hard of hearing for the next week and a bit. Hmph.

Hi, I work in a doctors surgery that offers this service and I know that we require a 2 week wait for the ear syringing because the patient needs to use olive oil drops (it softens the ear wax) for two weeks prior, if this isn't done the hardened ear wax can damage the ear drum. This couldn't be the reason for your wait could it?

Use Earex Plus (about £4.00 from any pharmacy) or olive oil for 2 or 3 days.

Then run yourself a nice bath and lie back in it so your ears are under the water.
After a minute or so move your head gently left to right, left to right several times - you shouldn't have any problems after that, they shouldn't need syringing.

I had an ingrowing toenail and was given a 2 month wait, I though I'm not waiting 2 months, and sorted it out myself.

See a vet and get the stuff for dogs. That stuff seems to shift anything out of my dog's ears in minutes!
