Can my mother cash a cheque for me?

Hi, I have a wee problem just now.
My bank accounts were recently frozen (for reasons that I shalln't discuss here just now) and I shall be getting paid from my work at the end of the month, I have explained my situation to my employer and they have said they can pay me by cheque, and I was wondering if there was any way for my mother to cash it for me?
I can't really cash it myself as at birth I was registered under a different surname to the one I use for everything today and myself and my mother have never been bothered to legally get it changed, and I also lack any sort of "decent " I.D such as a passport (as I've never been, nor do I plan on going abroad) or a drivers licence (as I've never driven, nor so I plan on).

So if my mother can cash it for me, it would be great if someone could explain how that can be done, if not, I'm welcome to any and all ideas/suggestions.

Thanks for any help!

No youre mum cant cash a cheque for you. Cheques are 'crossed' and have to be paid into an account who'se name is on the cheque.

The only other way you can do it is to get your boss to make a BACS transfer into your mothers account.

    Cheers for the swift reply.
I've already asked my employer to do that, but I was told that they can't due to legal reasons, they can only pay money into accounts with my name on them, but I now have none available to myself.

Also, isn't it possible to "sign over" the cheque to my mother?

No, it isnt for the reasons given above.

Like the other poster said, open a branch based savings account.

I dont see any reason why your boss cant make a one off electronic payment to you.

Legal??? i think he's pulling your plonker.

Businesses are doing this every day to pay their bills.

I tried opening a simple account with RBS not too long ago, but they wouldn't let me as I didn't have enough ID as like I said, I have a birth certificate in another surname, and that's all the ID I really have, so can you think of a way for me to open a savings account with next to no ID?
And as for a one-off electronic payment, they can do it to myself easily, but they won't put it into my mothers account, the reason I can't get it into my account is like I said, it's frozen.

Maybe you should, that way people may be able to help you get them unfrozen.

Why can't your boss put your mothers name on the cheque & your name on the cheque book stub ???
I stopped issuing cheques years ago in my business......

Thanks, but no thanks, I know exactly why they're frozen, but it's more of a personal matter so for now, I would like to leave that.

And Mervyn, would my mother be able to cash that cheque alone into her own account if both my name and her name are on it?
