Another set of books which are kind of OS (well I think of them everytime I hear about Thriftlady's quinces) are the Enid Blyton ones where the city cousins come to live on the farm. There's the fancy cousin Melisande and the plain cousin Jane. I seem to remember scenes in the kitchen with the maid Dorcas.

Can anyone remember the name of the series?

(ps found MMM on amazon. There is one edition where you get a doll with it. Only £43!!!. And one woman is complaining in her review that the books have not been updated. I sincerely hope no one ever does this!)

Edit - the quince reminder is cos there was a quince tree outside one of the bedrooms and they used it to escape at night.

I remember being so disappointed Mr Rudge didn't wait for MMM to grow up!
He was a really well created character wasn't he?! One of those men who little girls love because he has a real rapport with them and makes them feel special.

Just been looking for the books on Amazon but they all seem to be new editions, without the classic cover illustrations :(

  How ridiculous, what would be the point of that ?

I vaguely remember an Enid Blyton story set on a farm -can't remember any quinces though.

Happened to click through to someone's blog and found this by total coincidence.

Looks like there are MMM fans everywhere. (And I've spent years in the wilderness, where no-one remembered her)

I'm another Little house fan - in fact DDis named after the author. I also loved Millie-Mollie-Mandy.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet is Heidi - I remember being very impressed by her grandfather toasting goats cheese by the fire (although I hate cheese). I always wanted to taste it.

This is bringing back so many lovely memories.

What about Swiss Family Robinson - lots of OS there with the shipwrecked family.

Hmmm, I always fancied being Clara the picturesque invalid and spending all day looking serene on a chaise longue :D This dream influenced a fair amount of my preferred childhood reading matter :rotfl:

Which reminds me, there's a fair amount of Old Style inspiration in the What Katy Did books too.

I loved MMM too. I hadn't thought about her for years and now she's been mentioned I feel like I've been ignoring a dear friend! I can't wait to visit my parents again and try and find my old books :)

Oooh!! Lots of my favourites, and a few I haven't heard of before!

No-one has mentioned the Milly-Molly-Mandy books. I loved these as a child (and if you've read them you'll remember the booby rabbit...) and my favourite story was the one where Milly-Molly-Mandy is given a penny, and then spends it on mustard seeds, and when she cuts them, her mother gives her a penny, which she spends on something else... Or perhaps the one where she learns to do patchwork and makes her mother a new tea cosy.

Now I'm going to have to raid my daughter's bookshelf and read them again!
I loved - and still do, in fact - Milly-Molly-Mandy!

I'v found quite a few MMM books in charity shops and I had forgotten until I looked in one, the little map of the village! I don't know what it is but I loved that bit in the books!
