I bought a Milly-Molly-Mandy book in the same charity shop at the same time as I got the Little House ITBW!

I can't believe I worried about being thought a weirdo by the lady volunteering in the shop!

Moral of this story: There are no OS things that only I do!

I have a few books about the Home Front during the war, particularly the "Wartime Kitchen and Garden". I'm afraid I can't give any more details because the books are at home and we have no internet connection at the moment.

Has anyone read "Down and Out in Paris and London"? I'm not sure if you'd call it inspirational because it's pretty grim reading.

Oh my goodness. No one else ever rememberrs milly-molly-mandy. I soo wanted to be her when I was a kid

thanks for making me feel less of a freak. She does exist, she does, she does

I need to take your post as evidence to a lot of peopls:D
Three days ago I was presented with four large boxes of my books out of my mum's loft, and I'VE GOT MY MILLY-MOLLY-MANDY BOOKS BACK!!!!!!! :j :j :j I can't say I've looked at them yet, but I know I had about four of them - haven't investigated fully!

The one where she gets her own room was my favourite one too. I remember her bed having "an eiderdown and a counterpane", and the fact that because it was in the roof it had sloping ceilings. I used to pretend I was Milly-Molly-Mandy whenever I was at my Grandparents' house because they lived in a bungalow with a loft conversion and I had to sleep in the roof :j :j And there was the story about the den in the tree - wasn't that the cover picture on "More of Milly-Molly-Mandy" which I read practically to death? My favourite character was Mr Rudge the Blacksmith :D

It always seemed to be summer where they lived, because although I am sure the books said she wore "red serge in winter" all the illustrations I can remember show MMM wearing her trademark "pink and white striped cotton frock" (My mum made me and my sister matching "Milly-Molly-Mandy dresses" :o there's a photo of us somewhere wearing them!) She also made me a booby rabbit out of a hankerchief!

OK I'll stop rambling now! I'd forgotten how much I loved those books until you brought them up on this thread. Now I know what I will be doing this evening :o

Ooh, Mr Rudge was a bit of alright wasn't he :D ? What a shame he got married, although Milly Molly Mandy did get to be bridesmaid didn't she ?

I'm sure there's at least one story that features Milly Molly Mandy trudging through the snow with a coat on.

Do you remember the one where she goes to a party (and wins booby rabbit), I loved the bit where her Muvver and Auntie make her a party frock out of practically nothing -think the dress was cut down from one of her mother's and the collar was a lace hankie -real OS

    Now I'm feeling all nostalgic.

Do you remember the one where there's loads of them in Jessamine's parents' car and two of them have to ride in the folding roof? And I was also very jealous that it only cost a penny for a quarter of aniseed balls!

    That's it. (stamps feet)

I'm off to find some Millicent Amelia (?) Amanda books.

    For DD of course.;) :o

Might hunt out some Bobbsey Twins while I'm feeling nostalgic. Not so OS though.

Jessamine was the posh girl wasn't she ? I remember a picnic they all went on - was that it ? they had hardboiled eggs and bread and butter and fruitcake I think (see, I always remember the food in books :D )

Peem, it's Millicent Margaret Amanda !

There ought to be a fan site, but I can't find one.

    Of course - Margaret.

I do remember one of the Bobbseys wanting a cashmere jumper for Christmas. I was not impressed - wanting clothes? And I didn't have a clue what cashmere was - polyester maybe, but cashmere. Still don't have any myself.

I remember being so disappointed Mr Rudge didn't wait for MMM to grow up!

Yes, Jessamine was the one who lived in the big house with the railings... and yes, I think the picnic was when they ended up sitting in the roof of the car.

Ooooh and remember Grandma and Grandpa's golden wedding? And the one where she goes fishing with Billy Blunt and they both fall in? And the one where Little-Friend-Susan has to spend the night and it turns out it's because her baby sister is being born?
