Benefits, ill mum and girlfriend.

  • Hi, this is my first post/ reply on this site. Your mum needs to be on the middle or high rate of the care component of DLA to claim carers allowance. Not sure how it effects JSA, but you do need to be available 35 hours a week to get it, so it might do.

As for staying at girlfriend's sounds alright to me how often you stay. Watch that though or they'll call it co- habiting. If you live together you need to think about losing single persons council tax allowance if one of you is working.

what does everyone else do who is studying?

My mum does need help with things she can't do, like cleaning, washing, shopping, getting up, but there is no way she would want me back living there.

Student finance - simples and doubt you'd pay it back. Could prob do an access course first (don't know about funding) or a foundation course will no/low entry requirements.

Oh be careful about doing 'couple' things with the girlfriend, you could be seen as a couple by the DWP and her benefits stopped

Is that what passes as advice on here??? "Live a lie to keep your benefits?" I despair.

Also can someone tell me how somone in remission for cancer can be claiming DLA and need 35 hours a week care?

Are they using the term remission loosely (ie just got all clear and still suffering effects of Chemo) or does DLA and CA continue to be paid until a new award is issued?

There are many cancer survivors in the world who once in full remission don't need care - when is the award altered to reflect the changes?

There often seems to be one rule for (ex) cancer patients and another for everybody else.

I still think the OP's a WUM (I suppose I'll get deleted again for saying it...), but if not, I'd assume the DWP haven't been informed that circumstances have changed.
  • I'll have to ask... WUM?
