Or an XUD mind you the ford 1.8 "van" engine wasn't too bad either.

The XUD's are getting on now in age though aren't they? Can get SDI's up until around 2008.

The 1.8 is still available through the ford range....well it was up until recently when they couldn't produce it any longer due to EU rules.

People shun them as they are less refined...but that's exactly what I'd be looking for. Less refined = less to go wrong!

    Phew!

If it carries on like this, people might start to think that oil companies are selfish, greedy, money-grabbing, profiteering cartels - totally unregulated by sleezy governments who are happy to trouser the huge extra tax revenues......

    God forbid....

The other thing I notcied on indirect injection engines was that I would get the same MPG whether I drove gently, "hammered" them, cruised at normal speeds or at fast motorway speeds.

With high pressure direct engines the consumption seems much more variable even non turbo.

IMO the petrol/diesel argument probably falls in favour of petrol for small engined and smaller cars. I think when you go bigger and larger, higher mileage the diesel still holds sway. You can still get some expensive petrol associated failures/repairs too if you are unlucky.

Personally I prefer the driveability/flexibility of diesels doesn't mean to say I wouldn't go back if push came to shove.

There are all sorts of selfish, greedy, money-grabbing, profiteering cartels - totally unregulated by governments. It's the way of the world nowadays unfortunately.

Although I deplore the motley bunch of layabouts, latter-day hippies, tree-huggers, and thugs who indulge in so-called anti-globalisation protests, in terms of their real motives and the way they go about things, ultimately they do have a point.
