Next time I change I'll look into it in more detail.
Given the higher than average mileage being covered I'm seriously considering going back to diesel. I want a turbo back too!
Yer, I do miss the turbo, but I don;t miss the problems I got with the last one. I feel the petrol car is lacking, but would rather be lacking than facing all those problems. It wasn't just the cost, was the drivability and black smoke too.
Honest John is just inundated with 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 diesel turbo issues. It's all down to the thinner oils being used and the exhaust gases being passed back into the engine rather than being released. It contaminates the oil. That leads to sludge on the feed pipes to the turbo and eventually carbon in the turbo, leading to failiure.
The older engines don't pass the crap back into the engine, hence less turbo issues.
Even top gear did an article on it, suggesting turbos on both the newer petrols and diesels should now be considered a maintenance item due to the refinements and emission targets pumping the bad stuff back through the induction system.
Already there are many reports on turbo failires on the FSI petrol units.0 -
You kids don't know your born!
My first car in 1986 was a K reg (1972) mini 1000. If it rained there was a 1" puddle in the drivers footwell. I had to wrap aluminium foil round the grille (a well known mini mod) because rain would get into the alternator. It lasted a year before seizing up going up a steep hill - cost me £145 as well.0 -
Oh and one more thing! These turbos, they can fail in spectacular style! As happened to my cousin writing his car off completely.
This isn't his, but enjoy!

Can remember dad saying he decided to replace his floor with a pine floor in a van as the chassis was rusting out!0 -

K reg Viva 1256. 30K, 8 years old rust bucket that an uncle passed on for £400. He had had it from new still had the original cross plys on, which were changed for 155/13 radials, as they had flat spots. . Clutch went at 40K and sold it soon after, those engines often failed around 50K. Used to have to stop on the way to work in winter, after 1 mile, to dry damp out of the distributor cap with a rag. Sold it for £250 12months later.:p"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Or an XUD mind you the ford 1.8 "van" engine wasn't too bad either."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

What bugs me is how much turbo units are bearing in mind 1.) The number that fail and 2.) Intrinsically simple bit of kit (relatively) for the basic impeller bit."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
