Can't I have just the sports channels on Sky?

I enquired how much I'd save by cancelling the entertainment channels on Sky and just having the sport. I was told:
Me: How much is the sport if I cancel the entertainment?
Rahul : The entertainment cannot be cancelled as it is the basic packages the above two packages that I have mentioned you must have one of these packages in order to have sky.
Me: The sport is a separate package surely?
Rahul : No sport is an additional package which can be taken on top of entertainment or entertainment extra.
The entertainment cannot be cancelled if I want to keep the sport! What sort of scam is that?
Is what I was told correct?
On my account with Sky it says I have Sky Entertainment Extra and I have Sports pack

You were told correctly. Sport and Movies are add ons to the basic entertainment pack. You can save £5 / month by not having Entertainment extra. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Has this been the case for a while?
One always used in the past to be able to have just the sport.
Any chance if I say I'll cancel the lot they'll let me have just the sport?0 -
Always been so AFAIK. Much the same with Virgin Cable, Sky Sports will be coming to Now TV payg service, otherwise there is only Topup TV on terrestrial.
They may do you a half price deal, but be polite and prepare to actually cancel if you don't get an offer straight away.
Price rises coming in September as well. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

You have always been able to add and subtract Movies and Sport, but to remain a Sky customer, you have to continue to pay for at least the basic package.
It's by "packaging" channels in this manner that Sky make the most profit. It's the whole basis of their business model.0 -
Wonder how many Sky subscribers will cancel when they are able to get the Sports on the Pay As You Go service which is due to start before the end of the year? I know several people who only subscribe to the Entertainment package because they have to to get the Sport."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0

Does anyone know how much this sports Pay as you go will be.
I have to admit, We never particularly wathch the entertainment channel, we only have it because of the sports channels.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
You've always had to have the basic Entertainment Pack (or whatever it's branded as at a given point in time), and then can add on options on top of it.
I've never done, and have no intentions of doing PPV.0 -

I have Sky sports 1 and 2 and they cost me £20 a month ontop of my entertainment channel.
£5 a week for the sports channels is money well spent if you like sports to be honest. Im quite happy with it anywaymake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

You are all incorrect on this - for a short period approx 2 to 3 years ago IIRC (when it was the 6 pack system) you could subscribe to Sky Sports as a separate package BUT it was only £1 cheaper than a one pack plus Sports subscription - in other words they only deducted £1 from the price. It was never advertised but could be obtained by phoning CS. It was I believe totally discontinued when the present two pack system came in.0
