then there is always the option of swapping norton for a lighter alternative etc which again will improve things.

No, swapping Norton which is probably the best Anti Virus is a bad idea. I'd stick with Norton (I just turn it off when playing games) and spend the cash getting the extra ram. There are somethings where saving money isn't worth it such as changing security when you already have a good system. No free anti-virus is as good as a paid for, solid and regularly updated anti-virus. Look at ad-aware, good for finding the bugs, but as far as a preventative measure goes you'd need to upgrade it which means paying £30-50. You can get more ram for that. More RAM or an inferiour security package. I'll take the RAM.

Definitely worth a try - my system was noticeably quicker when I moved from NAV to AVG Free, which updates on a daily basis (sometimes more than once a day). I've had the latter for over 2 years with no problems. IMO it's a myth about free antivirus not being good enough. G

lol, Norton normally gets slated and im one of the ones who defends it as ive never had any issues with it, but i also know others get on great with the other alternatives especially the free ones. so swapping is NOT a bad idea. it makes alot more sense to swap than to shell out money(ok you can never have too much ram but dosent mean you HAVE to buy it).

hope your games are not online games as if your turning your secuirty off what good is that.

If I was the OP I would remove it - see Sky by Broadband is stealing your bandwidth. G

Added by KService It's part of a peer to peer package people agree to when signing up with 'Sky By Broadband' but it seems to be causing afew concerns over bandwidth use, the recurring issue when this is in logs is slow speeds, it doesnt uninstall when you remove Sky By Broadband and does not have a Add/Remove screen entry but it is a genuine service as Sky clearly state what it is on their site and in the terms and conditions. Removal Application provided by Sky READ_THE_INSTRUCTIONS Note: Located in C:\Program Files\KService\

my point was more that blueseychris is giving advice when I'm not sure he actually knows what he's doing

the poster can remove it if my orignial fixes do nothing

    the hijackthis thing is here

    http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=167915

    Once the above is done

    Please download Hijackthis 1.99.1:

    Download Zipped version
    Download Self-Extracting version

HijackThis creates backups; these are needed in case of any recovery issues.

Please create a directory on your C:\ drive called C:\HJT, download and unzip HijackThis into that directory. Run the program from that directory.

    STEPS For Creating Folder

    1. Please go to My Computer, open your C:\ drive, Select: New >> Folder and name the folder HJT.

    2. Download HijackThis to the new folder:

    3. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

(If you have downloaded the Self-extracting version of Hijackthis, then it will automatically install in C:\Program Files\HijackThis directory.)

    4. Close ALL windows except HJT
