  • Need to know a bit more than that. I can tell you're using windows XP.

You need to get to this window

    cpuhelp1fz2.jpg

To do that you need to

1 - Click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop using the right hand mouse button once.
2 - When the menu appears, select properties.

I need to know the information that is in that window as shown in the picture above. Don't write the info that I've blacked out, it'll allow others to copy your windows key and use pirate copies. In all it could just be that you need more memory (used by your PC for storing data used in tasks).

On to the subject of that process list.
    C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\ConfigFree\CFSvcs.exe

Configures wireless for your toshiba (i assume it's a laptop, most of theirs are).
    C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KService.exe

Do you have Sky By Broadband/Virgin Media? That's where this pest came from. It's a Peer to Peer (file sharing) program. Unless you actually use file sharing programs such as BitTorrent programs or Napster/Limewire like programs it's unlikely you wanted it and it's a malware (bad) program anyway.

    Kill it.
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7Debug\mdm.exe

It's a little file for debugging Windows. You need not worry about it, you can close it down and not suffer.
    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\X10\Common\x10nets.exe

WOW! That process path reminds me of DOS! Ah, the bad old days of computing.

It's used in video streaming. If your streaming stuff off the net don't close it.
    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
    C:\Program Files\Nokia\Nokia PC Suite 6\LaunchApplication.exe

Kill those. If your using Quicktime, don't kill the top one.
    C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe
    C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
    C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.2.1128.5462\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe

You can shut these down unless you're using Quicktime/iTunes. I recommend getting rid of Google Toolbar. It's oversized, uses recourses when it doesn't need to and clogs up your browser/desktop.
    C:\Program Files\Nokia\Nokia PC Suite 6\PcSync2.exe
    C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe

Unless your synchronising your phone and computer shut this one down. Shut down and remove MSN messenger unless you use it. There's better chat software out there such as Trillian which allows you to chat to people MSN, AIM, ICQ, Y! Messenger and Internet Relay Chat (chat rooms).
    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\Nokia\MPAPI\MPAPI3s.exe

Part of your phone synchronising software.
    C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe
    C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqimzone.exe
    C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqSTE08.exe

Used by Hewlitt Packard image software.
    C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe

If your not using it shut it down, itunes will slow your system down.

From the looks of that list it could be you haven't got enough memory. Like I said, post up those details and they'll tell us how much you have. Also

What do you use your PC for? That helps in deciding how much ram you actually need as a lot of the "Bargin" PC's have the minimum to run the operating system, such as Windows but aren't much good when you've gone down the line and are using more and more software.

    Also:

1 - Double Click on "My Computer"
2 - Double Click on "Control Pannel"
    3 - Double Click on "Add/Remove Programs"

    You'll see this

    cpuhelp2nu5.jpg

Go through the list, find any programs you don't want and that aren't vital to your system then get rid of them.

It's late so I'm off, but I'll check back tomorrow.

The first thing that you should have been told it to move HijackThis.exe into it's own directory i.e. C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe.

This is so that any changes that you make can be reversed if necessary.

Personally I would wait for help from one of the regular HJT experts on this forum!

What's the model number of this Toshiba laptop? Does it have built-in wireless or are you using a Linksys wireless USB adapter?

I ask because you have 3 different tools for managing the wireless connection: Toshiba ConfigFree, Intel and Linksys. If it has built-in wireless you could disable the latter two and just use ConfigFree or disable all three and use Windows Wireless Zero Configuration instead. Either way, it'll be 1 process instead of 9 to do the same job.

You can also disable some of the Toshiba tools like hotkey and zoom. These are just for convenience and the programs they fire up can usually be started by using Start - All Programs.

The only one that should be removed is this (it got onto mine an it was a pain).

    C:\Program Files\Kontiki\KService.exe

Back up your Hard drive just incase though, you can make a windows restore point and roll back to that if something goes wrong. Anything else you remove is up to you. I remove programs I don't use after 2/3 months.

As far as closing programs goes, if you aren't using it and it's non essential turn it off. This doesn't mean remove it. Like going out of a room you turn off a light, if I'm not listening to music I turn off iTunes and quicktime. Saves you a bit of processing power.

As far as I can see, you may want to invest in some more ram, I'd stick half a gig more in myself. Have a shop round and look at prices, they vary based on type and package. Also there's various maunfacturers with various prices. Kingston and Crucial are the two most well recommended makers. Ram Prices have crashed over the past few years so it shouldn't cost the earth. You will have to check type of ram you have, if you have manuals with your PC they will tell you. Your probably looking at package call SO-DIMM (Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module), the specific ram type will either be DDR or DDR2. Eitherway check your manual as it will give you the exact specifics for the RAM type and package. If not check the manufacturer website.

    .

more ram? once cleaned up would have thought 1gb ram would be ok..

Depends what you do and what your system needs for a minimum spec (XP-MC has a far higher basic requirement than original XP, which was bloated and sluggish and still is after 2 service packs). Normally I'd say a 1GB is fine, your computer will suppliment it with hard drive space in the form of "Virtual Memory". Then again look at that list and see that iTunes is running at the same time as Norton, plus the Nokia Synching program. iTunes and Norton love RAM, they eat it up. They're also pretty bulky to boot. Add to that the extreamly high probability that Windows will be using virtual memory and having to access the hard disk for programs, files and memory. Soon mounts up. Anything media related nowadays with the mass of codecs, file types and bloated program sizes will require a decent amount of ram. 1 Gig 3 years ago was a lot.

If, after all the performance settings and programs have been sorted, the system is still sluggish then go for more ram.

yes AFTER all other avenues have been explored hence the reason the hijack log has been posted. once this has been disected things could improve, then there is always the option of swapping norton for a lighter alternative etc which again will improve things.
