Hi hoping someone can help me on here , my partner claims DLA medium care and low mobility I claim carers allowance and also get income support in my name.We are in the process of appealing an ESA decision as my partner who as mental health issues, one of which is Agraphobia ,as been placed in the work related group. This weekend he received a letter asking him to attend his work focus interview at our local job centre plus now I cant stress enough how much this is not a possibility this as all been explained in the appeal letter but they obviously take no notice whatsoever.
Anyway basically my question is, as the IS I claim due to CA is means tested and in my name if/when my partners benefit is sanctioned due to not attending WFI would I be able to claim extra IS? as obviously I would be being penalised for no reason. Also does anyone actually know how much money is taken off benefits for not attending the jobcentre??
Thanks in advance

Why is your partner making a claim for ESA?
You are already claiming IS. You will receive no extra money just a load of aggravation. Always look for the easy way through the benefit maze. Use the carers route - it is much easier to work with.
Just concentrate on your partner keeping the DLA MRC award and looking forward to next year when PIP comes in. Keep gathering relevant evidence.
It amazes me why people claim benefits that will not up their income.
I heard of a 64 year old single guy a while back who was receiving Pension Credit, yet was still continuing to claim Contribution based ESA, attend assessments and deal with appeals to the Tribunal!
When I asked him why he was doing it - he said 'wasn't it the right thing to do?'0 -

As I understand it, no, you're not entitled to more, simply as the amount you are entitled to as a couple has gone down due to the sanction.
The maximum sanction is removal of the work-related component of ESA - so about 25/week.
I do not recall the details, but don't believe this imposed in full if you miss one WFI without 'good cause'.
First thing to do is to phone them, and get the interview postponed as much as you can - they can't as I understand it cancel it.0 -
It is often possible to have the WFI held over the phone.0

Isn't the new WFI now conducted on the same lines and with the same people that operate the JSA scheme?
Being in the Work Group now requires you to 'train' for a job, prepare for work and do voluntary work as well.

ok reason for claiming esa is because my partner was on IB so its the transition from that the DLA and CA were claimed after the IB years ago and as we know DWP no longer want ppl on IB so thought it was what we had to do would definatley rather not and it wasnt because I thought we would get anymore money as I know IS is means tested thats why i asked above question0 -

You are a couple, your income is a household one. As your partner's carer perhaps you could help them with coping mechanisms for leaving the house?0 -

Im his carer not a mental health nurse or a psychologist so how do you suggest I help him exactly? I think thats rather a patronising reply if he could go he would but he "cant "not he "wont" I wish it was that simple maybe you should try living with someone that never goes out of the house hes 44 and as no life at all so what coping mechanisms would you suggest I use shall I drag him to the jobcentre kicking and screaming??? think I might get locked up for that!!! o btw I did actually give up a good job to be his carer for the great sum of £58 a week think it would cost the governmant more tax payers money if I hadnt,,,,,,,, enough said.0 -
he doesnt need to claim ESA,
as youre a carer, you are entitled to income support ... so just add him to your claim instead.0 -

I'm agoraphobic, so I have first hand knowledge of the situation your partner finds himself in. With the support of those close to me I have found coping mechanisms to go out occasionally - there is plenty of information online that could help you look into this, you don't need to be an expert to help in this way. The worst thing you can do is reinforce his negative thought patterns, and that is the attitude that is coming across from you at present.0
