"yawn" well i guess it is time for your bed at the old folks home, pm is not a lasting solution as soon as it gets wet it leaks.

As for Putty, yes its is as stated, but it did and will still work, but is unlikely to be the best solution!

oh i love the old red lead putty especially when trying to get taps out of an old basin, i always tell my customers the basin may break getting them out, yeh really good stuff NOT.

With any jointing compound of any type in this scenario the excess will squeeze out but that is the whole point that which remains, between the 2 components, will seal the joint as required, if applied correctly and not excessively, and PM is not as messy as modern mastics!

haha not as messy that's only because you don't use it correctly.


Also it is not the thread that has to be sealed it is the space between the waste and the washer above the nut threaded onto the waste and the underside of the basin, THAT is the only joint that needs to be sealed, if the internal waste to basin leaks it will only leak into the waste as does the overflow!

incorrect, i have seen lots of basin wastes that leak with the water running around the thread passed the washer & round the internal thread of the nut, most of them sealed with "pm"

As for PTFE and hemp and bosswhite thats an opinion only domestic pipe bashers would adhere to :rotfl: try using it on 4" screwed and see if you still think the same :rotfl:oh maybe not that would be too hard for you modern advanced softies as you would never have known about stocks and dies, unless of course you have POWER TOOLS

"domestic pipe bashers" well that says everything we need to know about you, i have used lots of stocks & dies although not on pipe that size, yes times move on although you still seem to be stuck in the 1920's & you call us jurassic, nowt wrong with power tools they make the job easier & quicker which means less charge to the customer, btw hemp is illegal to use on potable water supplies.

I'm doing a tiling job at the moment with 12mm thick quartz tiles can you pop round with your brace & bit & drill a few holes for me you shouldn't be there any longer than 5 years.

If i require any advice (which i don't) on plumbing, heating or gas work i certainly won't be asking a talking teddy bear.

TBH (that's modern for "to be honest") i posted on this thread with the way i do it with 30 years experience, the OP did as i said & it worked, it was you that came on here calling me a bodger, you do it your way with pm & i'll follow behind you & i'll have more work than i can do, i'm not the one that started on about "in the good old days", i really don't care what you do/did in victorian britian this is the 21st century & whether you like it or not things move on, some things are better & some things aren't, yes i used hemp & boss white for years on cylinder connections but you aren't allowed to use hemp now, pm was brought out to replace lead putty but that doesn't make it the only option or any good, it's not it's rubbish, if you read some of my advice you will find i am more informed than you think, i do go on training courses & read all the trade mags to keep myself up with the latest regs so i can provide my customers with the best advice & best service, you will also find that i don't comment on every thread if i don't know the answer as i wouldn't want to give any of the OP's incorrect advice, if i don't know i won't comment (shame some other people didn't do the same), like it says you get no BS from me & i really don't care if you don't like my replies.

i welcome everyones views but what i don't like is being called a bodger just because i don't like a product & think it's rubbish which is why we are having this convo, "interesting" that you are either local to me or have googled my name, i don't say anything on here that i wouldn't say to anyones face so that makes no difference to me at all, btw i don't use the ship it's always empty & normally only open on weekends & no before you ask i don't use the vic either it's far too clicky

i have given you my reasons why i don't go in either of those, but if you want to make up your own reasons feel free.

i am not self opinionate (see i didn't have to shout), i tell it like it is or how i see it, i would rather be honest with people & not shake their hand with one hand & then stab them in the back with the other, i think anyone with the slightest sense can see who the bully is here, but i'm sorry it really doesn't work with me AT ALL, if you would care to look at some of your recent posts you will find that i have thanked you, not because you might know me, not because you might be local, but because i thought your replies were helpful & true, it's just a shame that you can't do the same but then i guess that is because you think you are always right & no one else is. if i am wrong then i am big enough to admit it.

i'm really not sure what you mean by your last statement, however i will say this, i don't care who you are or what you do, if i think you are wrong I WILL tell you & that goes for my family & friends so it's not just on here & if you don't like it TOUGH it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
