Been defeated by a sink ;(

We've had an extension going on since March and its done, apart from the sink! I have tried everything I can think of :wall:

We have a belfast sink with a weir overflow (built in). I bought a plug/waste set with a wide top on it as obviously the hole is wide, but the thread is still the same width as any other kitchen sink. It has two holes in the threaded part which are for the overflow.

I've put the plug/waste bit in, screwed in the bottom plastic nut, then attached the waste trap. I run the tap and water is literally peeing out from the bottom of the plug/waste.

I went on the hunt for big washers at our DIY and was advised to use Plumbers Mate (PM)

So, I've put a big sausage of PM under the top of the waste/plug bit, I've put a big sausage at the top of the washer and nut which screws onto the thread, then I screwed it up as tight as humanly possible, but it still pours out!

I'm convinced its water getting out of the two holes in the thread and running down the outside, but I can't block them up because at least one is needed.

Any ideas?

I don't know anything about belfast sinks or weir overflows but I'd suggest you'd be better off using a silicone sealer.
  • I'm worried about using silicone as if it doesn't work or I should be doing something else, then it would set and I'd be b*ggered!
  • can u get a picture up of what you have done or even better a video of the water peeing out

it's not coming out the slots they are there to take the water from the overflow, b1oody plumbers mate it's useless i never use it, don't keep it in the van & apart from an aprentice i once had the most garbage ever invented, go to a plumbers merchant & check you have the right waste for a belfast sink, get one plastic not rubber washer to fit it & a tube of mastic clear or white your choice, dry the waste & the sink & clean off all the plumbers mate above & below, loads of mastic on the inside of the sink where the waste goes through (not inside the hole just where the plughole bit sits on the sink) & put the waste in, mastic the top of the washer & put it on underneath, mastic the top of the nut & screw it on, tighten the nut but not TOO much, run mastic around the bottom of the nut (around the threads where the nut is to prevent water running around the thread) put the trap on clean off the mastic inside the sink with your finger then a paper towel & smooth the mastic around underneath with your finger, leave it for at least an hr then try running some water slowly if it's ok leave it overnite to dry. & chuck the plumbers mate in the nearest bin.
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • Thanks, I'll have a go tomorrow. By mastic, do you mean the silicone stuff?

yes sorry we just call it mastic, make sure you get one suitable for sanitaryware, the hole in a belfast sink are huge so make sure you get the right size washer.

  • Right, I've siliconed under the top of the flange (think that's the name!), above the big plastic washer under the sink, above the big nut that's on the thread of the flange and around the bottom of the nut.

I've got another 45 mins before testing it - wish me luck!
  • YEY!! It's fixed! I'll leave it overnight and check it tomorrow, but THANK YOU Keith!

  • Thanks again, its now the attachment of the dishwasher to the trap that's leaking, so I've put silicone on that too and it'll hopefully fix the issue.
