Renault Scenic ignition coils

If your Renault Scenic starts spluttering check your ignition coils aren't faulty. If so, Renault are aware of a coil problem & may pay for them - I was advised by my local dealer that ignition coils are £41ea & they replaced all 4 for free on my 4 year old Scenic.
Also, they advised all 4 sets of brake pads required replacing at a cost of £124 for the rear & £79 for front. When I queried the price difference I was advised the rear ones needed more 'bedding in'. This basicaly meant I would be paying for the mechanics time while he drove around in my car 'bedding' the brakes. I know main dealers can overcharge but I laughed when he wanted to charge £20 for 2 indicator bulbs & £18 for key batteries. All these extras on top of a regular service.

when I got back they told me the CD player prob was a known prob on these models and it would be replaced for free,
oh and the cigarette lighter fuse had blown so they had fitted a new one....................................for the cost of £24

I had all 4 coils replaced on my 1999 Laguna and Renault paid 95% of the cost. Not really sure why it wasn't 100%, but I wasn't going to argue. This was years ago though - so you are lucky if they've gone on OK for this length of time.

Renault Customer Services have just refunded the whole amount I spent on getting the RAC to replace all 4 ignition coils (all went within 3 weeks of each other).
Car was 6 weeks out of warranty (scenic 1.6 petrol) and done 22,500 miles).

Just wrote to Renault Customer Services and Customer Services Manager phoned me herself & refunded total cost no quibble.
Start by doing what's necessary, then what's possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.

FYI scenics also break their rear shocks regularly. We had one for 6 months and in that time it broke a rear shock and also caught fire due to the wiring going to the centre of the steering wheel (for the horn) shorting out.... we got rid of it after that and put it down to experiance!
  • My Renault Megane blew an ignition coil when I was on the other side of Scotland from home, I made it home, took it to the local dealer (85 miles away!) unfortunately by that time, running on 3 cylinders had meant the Lamda sensor in my exhaust system had melted and needed replacing.

They good news was that Renault would pay for the fault coil. The bad news was that when they put the new coil in the other 3 coils didnt like it and the engine wouldnt run properly. Replacing all 4 coils with new ones fixed the problem.

However, Renault would not pay for the other 3 coils, saying that they had not gone faulty!!

I think the whole thing cost me £220. That was over a year ago.
