I'm going away on a trip for about 40 days in Europe. The breakdown cover companies recommended on this site only cover trips of up to 31 days. Anyone got any recommendations?

It almost seems to me that it's not going to be much more expensive to just pay for any issues if and when they actually occur or is this stupid?

It depends on whether you can afford to write off your vehicle or not.

Can we assume you are talking about european motor insurance here?

Or is there some other assumption we should be making?

    see here http://www.adac.de/mitgliedschaft/adac_membership/ Please note
If you do not have a German address, please contact an ADAC local office or call 01805 10 11 12 (14 cent/min German landline, max. 42 cent/min. from mobile networks). We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
I would suggest unless you speak German, it may be difficult to call assistance if and when required.

Only once had to use euro breakdown. Green Flag were worse than useless.

ADAC use the AA call centre in Lyon (France), no communication problems there.

They still do take new UK customers, it's just not so easy to join them any more (thanks to the AA complaining about ADAC pinching UK customers).

I just don't see what benefit I'd get from EU breakdown cover - I can fix a flat myself and anything more complicated that that will ruin the trip even if they can give me a hire car for a few days.

How much would it cost to arrange a tow to a garage without insurance?

Can you get breakdown cover post hoc?

ADAC looks the best option though - does all membership include European cover?

I can't seem to find what exactly is covered...

Anyone know the phone number for ADAC? 01805 10 11 12 doesn't seem to work.

    edit - turns out that's a +49 number (they don't mention this)
