It's understandable that you feel like that everything happening so fast must have come as a huge shock to you.

Don't worry about what other people think, if you feel that getting a new dog / pup is the right thing to do and sooner rather than later then do it! Everyone deals with things differently and you just have to do what is best for you in Kia's memory.

ps. if it's not too upsetting for you I would maybe keep some of her things if you are considering getting a new dog? You might regret giving them away later?

Just wanted to say I'm really sorry to hear about Kia. I know how awful it is to lose a beloved pet. Hope that you can take some comfort in the fact that she is not suffering and will have known how much you loved her. RIP Kia xxxx

I am keeping her collar and tag, her tag obv is unique to her but going to put it on a bracelet or a necklace. Collar wont be used again but I want to keep it. I will also be keeping her food bowls as they are good ones.

The food I have left I am donating as it is a lot of adult food. Her bed we had to throw out as it was on this she passed away and there was some blood on it when the natural process started...

We do want to give another GSD a home but a puppy this time and a boy, I don't feel like I could have another girl any time soon as Kia was my girl and Meg before her. Just don't know if its too early to start looking, it will take time as will want a good breeder :(

Just at a loss, as expected
  • OMG Con ...... so shocked - started reading the thread and was sure you'd be able to come up with something with the vet to make her more comfortable.

So, so sorry to hear the news ..... you had such a short time together but please take some comfort that her final few months were in a home where she was loved to pieces and treated like a princess (as they all should be there whole lives).

((((hugs)))) to all the family ...... RIP Kia xx

I don't know where I go from here now.

I know that I would like another dog.. a puppy.

When ? How ? Will people think I am trying to replace her ? When is too soon ? I really don't know :(

the house feels SO empty already

I know just how you are feeling con, I am going through the same myself. Its been nearly 4 weeks for me, one day I feel fine then the next I am in bits.

One minute I think about getting another friend, then the next I feel bad for even thinking it.
All I can say is go at your own pace and do whats best/right for you. Whatever you decide you can be sure everyone here will give you the support you need xxxxx

Only you can decide when it is the right time to get another dog and what dog to get.

I've known people who try to get a dog as close to their old one as possible so in your case it would be another rescue GS girl around 5. I've also known people who go for the complete opposite so they don't ruin memories so a young male small breed. But of course that is entirely up to you.

Some people can't bear a dog free house so are getting a new one within a few weeks and others like to wait a year or two. There is no right or wrong and you have to do what you feel is right.

You took on a rescue dog expecting a companion for a few years but that has been cut short, it doesn't mean your want or need for a dog has gone just that it won't be with the dog you expected it to be.

8 months .... and I still have my moments.

I'm so glad I have Maisie now (2 1/2 months) - she does fill the "dog" gap and starting to enjoy lovely walks again ....... but she doesn't fill the "Ben" gap :(

IMO timing is personal tho many rescues don't always agree and won't entertain you for perhaps a month. I wanted another cat within days of having to PTS Noah, ended up waiting a few months and TBH it got harder not easier and was not the right thing for me. I couldn't fill the Noah-shaped hole in my heart and never will (cry whenever I post about it, and often when I think about him :( ) but I could fill the cat-shaped space in my life. You can grieve and learn to love again at the same time, does it matter what others think?
