    Spain!..................
when I went to Spain a couple of years ago there was a "proper" trained lifeguard at the pool who was first aid trained - saw him in action when there was an accident at the pool. No such thing in Greece or Turkey though.

Why? Accidents happen. If I went to a hotel in the UK I wouldn't expect to be charged for any accidental damage and I don't normally have 3rd party insurance when travelling in UK.

    I do.

You have insurance for just that reason, like car ACCIDENTS.

    I do.
Really, never heard of anyone else taking out holiday insurance when going to stay in hotel in UK. So if you go to say London for one night do you take out specific insurance or do you have annual insurance that covers you?

I have home insurance, car insurance and when I go abroad holiday travel insurance. But never insurance for UK for overnight stays in hotels.

When I was in Corfu they charged everyday at hotel for use of bed and small table by the pool. One of the tables broke and the owner blamed a youngster who hadn't broken it but the owner bullied him into paying up by threatening to kick him out of hotel. Holiday rep did nothing to help.

Well if you expect that, then you are going to be seriously shocked if you accidently break anything in the future...

I'm sure hotels do have some sort of insurance that covers accidental damage. Whether they will be willing to shoulder the huge premiums they'd have if they claimed on it every time someone broke something (which in Magaluf, will probably be a daily occurance) is a completely different matter!

in over 30 years of travelling never caused any serious damage so no shocks so far!

If they expect guests to pay for accidental damages then they should make that clear to guests before they book a room.

As you said you are SURE that hotels do have insurance for such damage, therefore I expect that to come into force if something is accidentally damaged!

I bought a house in Spain 2006 and it had 3 pairs of patio doors fitted, none of them would have got pass safety standards glass wise.
On a resort of several hundred properties we have had many 'accidents' where the glass has got smashed. Its inferior product but as only those in the room were present and know what happened have to put it down to an Accident ! and a expensive one at that !

  • I guess it's only money (just wish I had some!). Could have been so much worse.
I just hope his injury doesn't totally spoil his holiday as he worked hard to save for it.
    Thanks everyone for your comments.
