Hotel Damage

My son went to Magaluf with some of his mates yesterday and somehow last night managed to trip and fall through the glass doors leading to his balcony. He has 20+ stiches in his arm and had had to pay 300 Euros to cover the cost of replacing the glass and cleaning up the blood. He had been drinking but wasn't doing anything silly. The holiday is with Thomas Cook and when they arrived they were put in 2 rooms not the 3 they had paid for hence the room was cramped with stuff everywhere. They have been given their 3rd room today though.
I am a bit surprised that the manager knew how much the cost would be (he knocked their door first thing this morning demanding the money) unless this has happened before in which case are they using the right type of glass?
Just wondered what others thought. Flipping teenagers!

Just to confirm, you were not actually there then?

    That is my thought also!

When I worked in a hotel we had a scale of charges for damage - no patio doors so I can't tell you how much we would have charged for them, but the lowest charge was £50 (for discharging the fire extinguisher). I would say 300 Euro is fair for a patio door, remember it is not just the materials but the labour and admin involved in the repair process.

With regard to not being given three rooms, they should receive a refund for the third room for the nights they did not have it.

I say 'fliipping teenagers' as they are such a worry. Have also spent time trying to sort out his mobile phone as it is not working abroad and have had to transfer money to him to cover cost of broken glass.
I believe he wasnt doing anything silly but also think he may not have tripped over had he been sober.
I will look into him getting some money back for his first night. It won't be much between them all but will help.

Would the hotel charge a family if they had fallen against the patio doors? Did the doors have safety glass?

if they broke the patio doors, yep, pretty sure any hotel would charge you, family group, group of teenagers, whatever.

I would say that this is just one of those things that they will have to take as a "lesson in growing up" rather than having his parents help clear up the mess.

I personally would expect the hotel to have insurance against accidental damage.

I personally would expect the Holidaymaker to have insurance for 3rd party liability.

However if they WERE pi**ed that might well invalidate it.

Why? Accidents happen. If I went to a hotel in the UK I wouldn't expect to be charged for any accidental damage and I don't normally have 3rd party insurance when travelling in UK.
