Traveling to NY on my own

Have been planning a trip to New York with the lads for the last few months only for everyone to bail on me so I've decided to go on my own. I've booked a private double room in a Hostel for £59 for 4 nights (Reviews arent too bad, can't believe how cheap it was) and have found flights through Continental for £283 which i'm chuffed with, not booked the flights yet waiting to see if I can find anything cheaper. Anyone know if any of the airlines are planning a sale in the near future

Anyway has anyone ever traveled on their own? How did it go? I'm a bit nervous but at the same time can't blooming wait

There are many on here better qualified to help with flights than I and I am sure you will get many suggestions .

As to travelling alone, I do it all the time now my children are grown and flown . Company is nice but you allways meet new friends and that is part of the joy of single travel plus you are a free agent and can just do what you want .

Most Americans love talking to us Brits and I am sure that you will have no problems and may in fact decide to travel alone in the future .

    ENJOY !

I also prefer travelling alone. It lets me be selfish and do all the things I want without having to worry about someone else who might want to do other things. I went to NY in November and had a lovely time. People are very helpful and kind not at all like their reputation. Someone said that New Yorkers spread this story about them being rude and unhelpful otherwise they would be over run with visitors!

Public transport is very cheap and easy to use - buses, subway and Path trains all seemed very safe and unthreatening. As has been said you are much more likely to get into conversations with people when you travel on your own. Have a great time!

Yeah I've always been comfortable in my own company, just a bit nervous about going all the way round the globe on my own I guess. Pretty damn exciting though. Yeah sure I will meet lots of nice people

Use the link above you`ll find all your answers.

I spent 5 days there last week and was also alone,no problem at all.

Use the public transport fast and real cheap(7 day pass for 24 dollars)

Which hostel did you book, sounds very cheap for new york ?

I stayed in the herald sq hotel a block down from empire state building
real good deal for new york.

    You`ll have a great time
  • Crikey $24 is cheap, don't suppose that includes airport transfers.....silly question.

It's the Continental hostel on the Upper West Side, nice area apparently.....although John Lennon did get shot around there. Errrmmmm well i'm sure it's safer now. Apparently the Hostel is very basic but I need to do it all as cheap as possible, plus I don't intend staying in my room for any length of time

pricey ,regarding airport transfer which airport are you flying to ?

John lennon got shot in the dakota apartments 23 blocks south
of where your staying, on central park west, its only a short 12 min walk.

If I go back I will stay around the area you are staying,it is so easy
to get to all the touristy places and so much cheaper for a bed.
  • Did he?Cripes I'm not even there yet and I'm lost already.

    Flying to Newark

95th Street is a good location. Right beside Columbia Uni, so student tastic !! 95th and down goes into a really nice neighbourhood, but wouldn't head far too higher than 95th to be honest, but 95th is FINE.

Right beside the subway, will zoom you down to wherever you need to go in 10-15 minutes.

Go for it for travelling on your own ! New York is the perfect place to do it as you will be so busy that you won't realise you're on your own and places where you might want your picture taken etc i.e Empire State Building, there are plenty of tourists that will do it.

I don't know where you are flying from, but if it's one of the Continental flights from Scotland, then I would grab that price with both hands.

You MAY get it cheaper if you are flying out of an English Airport, but will not get a cheaper direct flight form Scotland.

Continental flights go into Newark airport, get the airtrain into Penn Station and the sub up to your hostel. Airport train is $13 each way.
