Choosing a baby monitor. Advice please

Hello, we're expecting our first baby in October and my Granddad has very kindly offered to buy us a baby monitor. (I would normally most on the pregnancy thread but know a lot of more of you will have had experience of baby monitors, than post on those threads.) He has said money is no object and to just get what we want/need, but I dont necessarily think this means getting the most expensive one we can find.

We are keen on having
- a monitor with the lights to show the breathing
- a sensory mat which alarms if the baby stops breathing
- a digital screen so we can see the baby when he's in bed.

I've done quite a bit of research online over the last few days and have read reviews etc. I'm keen on Tommy Tippee and Angelcare but wondered if there was anything else major I was missing?

Thanks :D

We were quite keen on that one harrys nan, thanks. The only thing is it doesn't have a digital screen for watching the baby - I'm not sure how important that is

    Hi there

We also have the Angelcare, and we have the sound on constant when he is in his room, have had no problems with it unless he moves right to the bottom of cot and the sensor mat doesn't pick him up, so the alarm goes off (least we know it works though).

He is now 21 months old, I am in living room and monitor is down here quietly humming with the temp showing. It gives me peace of mind and I don't feel the need to keep checking on him.

When he was first born he was beside us in the moses basket anyway and because we kept moving the basket downstairs we actually only started to use the angel care when he moved to his cot.

I love it, we have really thick walls and the reception is really clear. Never felt I needed the screen, especially as in the early days baby will be round you 24/7 anyway.

I don't know if this controversial but our baby came with his own distress alarm.

Get grandad to put the money in baby's junor ISA.
  • Please remember that whilst your breathing monitor might tell you that the child isn't breathing, it is up to you to find out what to do if your child needs resuscitating.

Avail yourself of some baby first aid - ask your midwife if the local hospital runs a course :)

    We've done the Cornish - thanks :)

MX5huggy - no he doesn't want to give money. He wants to buy something we need/want. We definitely need a monitor, so we'll get one with all mod cons if we can.

    Why's that?

Because its a waste of money, the human race has survived for a very long time with out monitors it's only the last 15 years that this fad of knowing what a perfectly heathy baby is doing every second has come about.
