My HTC Desire low on storage space due to Facebook, which I don't even use!

Facebook had been nagging me to update, so I finally let it. Just now it updated on my HTC Desire and this was followed by a low storage space warning. Facebook is the third biggest app on the phone at 12.63MB. I didn't install it and don't want it, but it is not possible to uninstall the app and it can't even be moved to the SD card like many apps can. The only option is to uninstall updates, and I imagine it will then start nagging me again.
I managed to move a few smaller apps to the SD card, but how annoying that Facebook forces its way onto our devices!
I understand a phone can be 'rooted' to get rid of it, but that sounds a lot of hassle to go to so I guess I just wait for the next low storage message in a few weeks.
BTW, it amazes me how little internal storage the phones I have owned have. I suppose the more modern handsets have more, but users shouldn't ever have to worry about storage in this way.

Running out of internal storage space is becoming an increasingly common problem on some Android Phones. There doesn’t seem to a be a single cause but there is a known glitch on several HTC models that allows the contacts list to inflate to several times its normal size. Moving apps to a removable SD memory card can also help, though some of the biggest ones, like Flash can only be installed on the internal memory.
One way to take charge of where your phone stores large files is to ‘root’ the operating system but this is a tricky procedure that will almost certainly invalidate the warranty and if you botch it the phone can be rendered unusable.
This type of problem is common with the Android Phones other mobile OS's do not install apps to internal memory, only use the internal memory to run the app.
There is still a lot you can do to claw back space, though, including fixing a bloated contacts list and transferring apps that can be moved to the SD card.0 -

Usually a very simple procedure .
Yes any firmware modification on any phone voids warranty .
Easy on most Android phones to remove root and reinstall original firmware .
Unusable or hard bricked phone very very very unlikely .
Internal memory i understood that apps installed to storage not memory as memory is a separate partition but an expert may prove me wrong in that .
OP in your applications manger you may be able to one clear data in Face book and two uninstall or freeze it .

With Android OS some apps need to be installed on the internal memory only not on the storage card or storage memory.
With other OS ios or Widnows phone apps are installed on the storage card if avaialble or storage memory. The interanl memory is only used to run the app.
With Android 4 and above the os works same as others.0 -
one need to understand that HTC desire have only 512MB internal memory for storage/app. Its not hard to use this up as the OS itself will have used up most of it. This is a major drawback of the Desire which HTC didn't foresee beforehand. Good thing that the new HTC handset does not have this problem.0

 I totally agree about Facebook. I have an HTC Incredible S with similar problems and would like to be able to delete Facebook, which I also do not use but which uses loads of storage. Any ideas anyone?0 -

Thanks for the responses. I don't think I'll go to the trouble of rooting the phone, as moving a few smaller apps to the memory card has stopped the low storage warnings for now.0

OP I suffered 2 years of your problem with my HTC Desire. It was a truely fantastic phone, apart from its fatal flaw of lack of space for apps!!
I got my Galaxy S3 last month and finally I am free. Over 8GB of space to install every app in the store if I want to!!!0
