In return for giving me a discount they got to keep my custom for a while longer rather than having me cancel there and then and join SkyThey should have mentioned it. But equally you might have asked what they were getting in return for giving you a discount?
Why would they reduce your tariff just so you could give your notice the next day if you wished?0 -
But they won't do that without a new minimum term. Otherwise you could have taken your discount and given your 30 days notice the next day.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I'm in a very similar situation. I've been with Telewest/Virgin for 5.5 years. In February I phoned up to get Baby TV added to my package and complained that whilst they were charging me £3.50 for it, I'd get it free with Skye. The operator then proceeded to add it to my package for free as I'd been a long standing customer. Great.
Yesterday I called to say I was moving and would be happy to have Virgin in my new house. They don't supply tv in the area so it would only be ADSL and Phone for which I'd have to pay £35. I currently have XL TV, Virgin +, decent phone package and fibre optic broadband for £50. Erm its a no brainer really, I'd rather get Skye. However they then spring it upon me that in Feb when they added Baby TV to my package they also signed me up to a new contract and therefore I need to pay £160 disconnection fee. Erm I don't think so. I think thats crazy. How do they justify the disconnection fee when I've been with them for 5.5 years? Which email address did you send your email too?
I really get why they put people into a minimum term contract when they're offered something like half price service, although they shouldnt trick people and let them know it's in exchange for a new contract.
What's cant get is them doing it in lisa* case. That's just ridiculous and I'm sure if they'd warned her, she'd have rather taken a £3.50 a month bill for a short time.Data protection is there for you, not for companies to hide behind0 -
in the same situation here. moving from a cabled area to a non cabled area.
i've come across a couple of tricks that sound good - but would just like a 2nd opinion before trying them on...
1st - call up say i'm moving (not cancelling) and find that they can't supply, cancel - happy days...
2nd - call up say i'm cancelling the bband, but take out the absolute lowest virgin media services service that i can find (the £7 sim only deal or a cheap 12 month phone contract at say £15 a month). that would constitute a new contract, and then just cancel within a few days.
3rd - upgrade my current virgin services and then cancel within a few days as it constitutes a new contract.
would any of these tricks work? i don't want virgin adsl - daft as it sounds would rather pay the £160 early term fee.0 -
Bump. I'm
In same situation. Did anyone try the above trick?love you lots like jelly tots0 -
I wanted to get out of contract as I was lumbered with their Superhub after they sent me a fourth one which did not work properly. They would not let me cancel as it was over 7/14 or how many days (no thanks for letting me beta test their equipment). I decide to wait until the end of the contract but downgraded my other packages to the minimum. Their system could not cope with that and Vgn tried to convince me that the downgrade was a new contract each time I phoned. Never again.0

If you're in a non-cabled area, what's the alternative to ADSL?I Hate Jobsworths!!!0

I've had the same thing, however they didn't mention that ADSL was an option through them at my new address they just said they don't supply a service to the area, do you think I have a case? I would have used their ADSL service at the new address if they had told me it was an option, there is no fibre available to this house at all so it wasn't going to be better for me to go with any other provider...0

They don't do ADSL any more which is why they didn't mention it.
You have no case. Your options are pay the remainder of your term or don't, and let them chase you for the money.0 -
one option you have is that twice per year they increase prices so take up adsl and cancel free as soon as they increase line rental at new address0
