Would be great if everyone could have a look and sign the petition:

"Our campaign

THE Sun’s campaign calls on the Government to take the following steps to improve public safety:
  • Make every dog’s owner accountable for its actions.
  • Microchip every dog.
  • Have one national registration system.
  • Prevent cruelty and attacks by giving police and dog wardens power to issue warnings when people aren’t doing the right things for and with their dog."

I realise it's not perfect and it would be difficult to enforce but IMHO it would be a good starting point and far better than what we have now!

As much as it's a good idea to microchip in order to hold abandoners accountable, the above line worries me about the sun's idea of what constitutes a 'fearsome' dog. Staffies are big softies if raised right, just like any other dog raised right.

The thing is most responsible pet owners follows the first three points. Its the ones that need teaching the rights and wrong of pet ownership that need to be addressd, and we all know that will never happen mores the pity.

Of course I will sign but we all know pets are not vote winners xx

I think its the owners that need microchipping! I agree with SPP below - its a worrying campaign if The Sun are going along the lines of the majority of dogs being staffies.

Theres no such thing as a dangerous dog - its the owners who are the dangerous ones. You should have to attend compulsory dog training in order to own a dog - so many people don't understand or care about, the responsibilities that come with dog ownership.

I know this currently owning a rescue (not a staffie but a dog which would be seen as a typical family dog) who came to me with biting and snapping tendancies. She now hasn't bitten anyone for 3.5 years with careful training and ownership (please note that I would never have allowed her near anyone else if she was the same dog I received direct from rescue).

However, much can't be said for her previous owners - never met them (nor would I want to ) but I can vouch that my dog is a completely different dog from the one who came to me 4 years ago.

Irresponsible ownership = dangerous dogs. I am disgusted that The Sun is condeming a particular breed  so unless they stop this, I won't be signing it.

But the majority of the dogs are staffies.:rotfl:

Did you bother to read the story or have you just jumped onto the bandwagon?

How will microchipping protect anyone? Good owners will or may already have micro chipped. Bad owners will continue as they are.

How much will it cost to set up a national registration system. How will this be paid for and who will police it? The police wont have the time.

If they suggest a license scheme the same will apply as my point on the micro chipping.

So no I wont sign it because it's poorly thought out and a newspaper leaping on a few tragic incidents to sell some newspapers and demonise dog owners

One rescue centre does not account for every rescue centre.

Seeing as that waste of paper is mostly responsible for the idiotic concept of Devil Dogs in the first place, they can go !!!! themselves with their mock indignation and their petition.

Agreed. I would certainly support any proper move to have "weapon" dogs (and more pertinently their owners) dealt with, but it's just sheer hypocrisy from the Soaraway Scum.

So we should do away with all the controls over car ownership and driving because the good guys have licenses and insurance anyway and the bad guys don't bother? Actually only a minority of dogs and cats are microchipped at present, so by your logic the majority of pet owners are bad. And it's actually the RSPCA that want compulsory chipping and licensing, not a half-baked idea conjured up by The Sun. Licenses are already compulsory in other countries including Northern Ireland, so the idea is workable.

Well that is enough for me to know that this is a very stupid, ill thought out campaign. Each decade the media dub a different breed a 'devil dog' first German Shepherds, then Dobermans, Rottweilers and now it is the turn of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier who, through no fault of it's own has become the chosen dog of the chav brigade who parade them around like badges of honour and encourage them to fight. These dogs are actually extremely friendly and if treated right are no more likely to bite you than any other dog. Shameful campaign.
