I hope none of the deceased person's family come on this site!
Although some of the comments you have all made are quite entertaining, they are not very sympathetic!

But I have to say I agree with Tils, thats the privelidge you get for paying £3000 for a flight, If a passenger dies you get to share your first class flight with them LOL

Some people have no sympathy do they.

If someone close to you died whilst in-flight, would you want them to roll them up and bung them in a cubby hole somewhere?

I think putting them in a toilet and locking the door is the best thing to do, as it's probably not a nice experience being seated close to a deceased person, and gases and liquids can start to leak, but putting them up front is the second best option. If it happened to me, I wouldn't be over the moon, but I certainly wouldn't complain and kick up a fuss. I'd act humanely and stick it out.

I think Singapore have some morgues on-board on their A340's, but not many have this.

Unfortunately it's a sad fact of life, and people should accept it and show a bit of compassion.

She should have been stowed in the flight cabin...I mean the pilots wouldn't have noticed right?
  • As a former BA crew member, I sympathise with the crew in that situation. We were trained to deal with illnesses, childbirth, death on board and in all of these situations you have to minimise the disruption to other passengers and be as discreet as possible in dealing with it. The crew are told to take the deceased to a quiet area of the aircraft and if only first class was available then they had no choice. Yes they could block off a toilet but if the deceased was travelling with other passengers and was left in the toilet, how much more distressing would that be for them to think of their dead relative being dumped in the toilet. As for the gold card customer, there is no way he would have been spoken to in that way and he will be well compensated for his inconvenience I am sure (BA have a special department for this which regularly hand out free flights to disgruntled passengers who suffer such hardships as a seat not fully reclining and so on). Going off the subject slightly, to do with upgrades, I was travelling as staff on a flight (in economy of course) when an African lady with a rather large a**e was shown to her seat, she took one look at the seat and started shouting and screaming that it would be uncomfortable for her to sit there and demanded an upgrade to Club. She got it, lesson there being, put on some weight and make a fuss onboard, you might get lucky, just don't eat the food put down to you as you never know what's been added to it??!

I think under these circumstances the best bet if possible would be to make an emergency landing. especially considering that at room temperature bodies decompose rapidly. any gases or viruses released by the corpse could potentially be very dangerous especially in an enclosed plane with no fresh air supply!

The reason this doesn't happen is that wherever you land, a coroner would have to be called upon landing, possibly an autopsy would be undertaken, and the body would be held over in a random country for a length of time and lead to extremely costly (for the family of the deceased) return to the relevant country.

Quite simply, this would massively exacerbate the cost, hassle for the family, time before burial etc, so it's been decided that this will not happen.

I could tell you some stories but you'd never eat onboard an aircraft again!!

If it's a cold meal yes but hot food, bread etc has to be heated in the ovens prior to it being loaded on the trolleys.
