If I were in the market I would look for a similarly priced Medion laptop or perhaps a Compaq/HP. The Packard Bell computer owners always seemed to be ringing up more than owners of other brands but that might be due to them being pushed more as they are PC World's own brand therefore selling in higher numbers.
Spec is fine, but Ive heard people having problems with Packard Bells than similair priced makes.0 -
The only problem I see with that PC is it uses shared graphics, so although it has 1024Mb of RAM, 128Mb is used for Graphics leaving you with 896Mb. That should be enough for most purposes, but if you look on the web you'll see that most articles say you need at least 1024Mb for Vista and preferably 2048Mb.
Have you looked at Dell? They often have some decent offers. It's my problem, it's my problem

To be honest I would avoid buying anything from PC World. I used to like going in there just to test the idiots.
Go in there one week and ask for a PC that does multimedia to a high level along with top gaming and they will point you in the direction of the same desktop they pointed out to you a week ago that you wanted mostly for simple internet browsing. Utter sh!te!
You have to remember that the sales guys at PC World will only tell you what is in THEIR interest to boost commission as mentioned before and also they run a lot of other incentives behind the scenes if they sell a certain quota of a product or machine regardless if it is actually any good.
The best thing to do if you buy anything from PC World is do the research yourself and go in there "tooled-up" as it were so they don't try to hoodwink you.
As for viruses, do the research about them and find out what they do. Simply not downloading stuff from the net through fear of getting one is ludicrous and will hinder your PC and overall productivity.
A great virus prevention for your new laptop is AVG Anti-virus. It's free and updates on a regular basis.0 -
i have seen another one i liked. it's £50 more at £670
it's a
Phillips x59,
INTEL CORE 2 DUO T5200 Processor 1.66GHz
667MHz FSB, 2MB Cache,
1024MB RAM
100 GB Hard Drive
DVD+/- RW Optical Drive
12.1" Brite Widescreen
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
224MB Intel GMA 950 Integrated Graphics
is it worth the extra £50?0 -
What do you think? is this a better make than packard bell?
it says it has intergrated graphics is this better or the same as shared?0 -
Integrated graphics is the same as shared. It's a better processor but it doesn't mention if it is a dual layer dvd rewriter. Also the Graphics use even more of the main memory on this one.
I've no experienc eof Philips laptops so no idea if it would be better than the Packard BellIt's my problem, it's my problem

PCW staff do not get commission.
As for Office, most decent versions work fine with Vista, however read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932087 for more information. And I quote:Microsoft Office 2000, Microsoft Office XP, Microsoft Office 2003, and the 2007 Microsoft Office suites are all supported on Windows Vista. The 2007 Office suites were extensively tested on Windows Vista for best compatibility.
Because Office 2000 and Office XP are in Extended Support, there have been no fixes for issues that occur when these products are run on Windows Vista.
Because these versions of Office are in Extended Support, there will no more service packs for them
So in essence, the above link details what the sales guy was probably trying to say, but not being very clear about it.
TBH, Office 2007 is a nice piece of software which differs hugely when compared to previous offerings. I find it makes things easier to find once you get used to it, but it obviously depends what you use the software for. This is not a signature...0 -

Theres nothing wrong with going into PCWorld as long as you know exactly what you want to get ie. specific router, printer cartridges etc.
For sheer convenience they can't be beaten.Lack of money is the root of all evil.
