I have the exact same problem too, quite used to clothes without fabric softner now. Dread to think what the problem is and how much it would be to fix it!!
Just to win anything would be great!!

I had the same problem a few years ago and decided to look when it came to the rinse cycle inside the little drawer to see where the water was going and it never went where it should have but to one of the other compartments(the one for the powder) and so I used to just pour in the softner at this time and all worked well - took a little of the automatic idea of the machine away lol but never mind.
Aint got a signature - as I cant think of anything world wisely to say.

i don't want to hog the OP thread.in my case the water goes into the compartment but won't go.so basically i'm left with what i put in there PLUS the water.for months now i've been putting the socks in a bowl of water with the softner when the washer has finished.hate cardboard socks

When mine does that, I swap to a 2 in 1 washing powder for a week or so and then it works fine for quite a while.

ive always thought its a good idea to do a full cycle hot wash now and again with just water and nothing else.
helps to keep the inside and workings clean, from all that powder and gunge etc..
    Get some gorm.
