Ebay Item not Recieved by buyer Grrrrrr

I have recently sold items on Ebay and i was contacted by a buyer stating the item which was a Genuine Barbour coat has not been recieved and a dispute was opened and still ongoing, I have proof of postage and also added extra terms to the listing due to previous designer items not being recieved. I stated in the listing that due to numerous parcels going missing that i would post first class with proof of postage but strongly advise to request recorded delivery at the end of the auction for a further cost of £1.00 but this service would only be added on request and if the buyer did not choose this option then i would not be held responsible for items not recieved and if the bidder/buyer was not happy with the terms they where asked not to bid. Can anyone tell me where i stand with this.

Assuming it has been a reasonable time, say 10-14 days then you will have to refund, you have no choice at all.

It remains your responsibility as the seller to get the item to the buyer, there is no point in offering enhanced services as they are for your benefit, not the buyers benefit so no buyer will bother paying for them.

As you have proof of posting and assuming item is under £46 then you can claim your own losses from Royal Mail after 15 working days.

For future reference have a read of the sticky postage thread on this forum.

Oh and take this statement out of your auctions, it is nonsense and for some reason seems to attract problems.

I would try & find the local delivery office to the buyer & give them a ring to see if the parcel's there.
  • If it is a big parcel (coat), then it is more than likely at the sorting office or local post office awaiting return to said sorting office and then it will be sent back to you - assuming you added a return address.
So ask the buyer for their sorting office if they know it and then find out telephone number and ring them straight away. They should be able to tell you if they are holding this parcel there for your buyer. If yes, get details and send email to your buyer about where it is and ask them to confirm when they have picked it up or re arranged a suitable delivery.
IT is simple to deal with these problems.

Always make sure they only have the option of recorded delivery on top name brands.....I'm sorry but i think there is a high chance you have been scammed as (as stated by Soolin) it is your responsibility if it gets "Lost" in the post....as to how you can claim it back from Royal mail when you paid more but is used....I'm not sure how much they pay out.....would love to know that answer if anyone can add?

As stated - its not the buyer who needs the insurance - its the seller. They don't need to pay for it - unless you include it from the start.

All Ebay buyers are in a position to claim non-delivery for none tacked items - and all will win a claim. Thankfully - most are honest and decent.

Yep, as above, it's the seller who will need to make a claim with royal mail, so you should be selecting the post method to suit your needs, not the buyers.

Recorded doesn't insure against theft or loss in post - only Special Delivery will do that. The only thing Recorded insures against are false INRs, which are fewer than people might expect.

I'd always send things above the insurance threshold Special Delivery, to protect the buyer's payment and the item, but would never bother with RD below that - the benefits are illusory and it jacks up the postage cost on low-cost items.

The Op stayed around long enough to read the earlier responses last night, then logged out without responding. I am not sure the replies were exactly what they had expected.

Doesn't matter, if there's a thread going, someone will answer it.

I heard on the official forums that someone refused to believe large items could get lost until he heard of a missing bed.
