How safe is verified by visa?

I was about to make a purchase then a verified by visa box popped up. It was asking me for my name, postcode, DOB, card number, security number and sort code. How safe is it to put all of this information into the little boxes and register?
Is it just as risky as putting in any information to other websites to make purchases? I've never been asked to put in all this information, at once, before.

  • - I've been using the [XML-based protocol] 3D version since 07/08 or whenever it was introduced
    - the earlier non-3D version was around the very early 2000's
    - I've never ever had a single issue with it
    - in very very many cases you will not be able to 'shop on line' without it
    - put simply, depending on where you shop no vBv no dealings

I would also recommend registering via your own banks website first. That way you know it's secure. Any further VbV requests will only ask you to confirm your password as an additional security measure.

That all sounds very suspicious to me, all verified by visa ever asks me is 3 characters from my "memorable name"

Or is that what happens if you haven't set it up with your own bank in advance?
I've had it set up so long I can't remember how it started out.

In my experience VBV has never worked! I usually end up doing the deal by telephone.
Originally Set-up at Nationwide and I usually get asked for the password
Of course different forms and passwords for CC and DC:(
So saying it's very rare that I get asked for VBV. So maybe it's just me.

Not at all impressed with the system

I set mine up last year (I think), never had any problems and all I get asked for is my VbV password.

The first time you ever register for it, it does ask all of these details. As has been said by other smart posters, if you are concerned (especially if it's a site you've never used before) register it via your banks website.

In genuine cases, it's not actually the site asking for it, it's the verified by visa site that it redirects to.

Any time after that it only asks you for 3 random digits/letters from your passcode/word that you chose when you set it up. You can change the password later, if you forget via the verified by visa box.

Most sites request that, or similar versions now with card payments.

I gave up on how "safe" it was down to the fact it never asks me any more, and just skips the step. neither my bank, nor verified by visa know why. Useless to help protect me.

Halifax no longer seem to use Verified by Visa (Halifax Secure as they call it), the box briefly flashes on the screen when you check out and then goes again.
A straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting.

    This from Nationwide website.

There are two ways to register for Verified by Visa (VbV).

You may be prompted to register for VbV whilst shopping online with a participating retailer using your Visa debit or credit card.

This is quick and easy to do, and once you've registered you'll be returned to the checkout to complete your purchase. View example of screens you will see when registering whilst shopping.

Important: You'll be given the opportunity to register when shopping online at Verified by Visa retailers. If you do not register during the first attempt, you will be able to complete your transaction as normal. However, if on the second request you do not register, you will not be able to use your debit or credit card with any online Verified by Visa retailer until you have completed registration.
