    Did you use self-raising flour?

    Yes I did.

It rose alright, and was nice and fluffy.

    Just not enough depth.

Oooh, another volunteer for island living here! Also a jack of all trades & master of nothing much, I'm a spinner, weaver, dyer, stitcher, papermaker & general recycler of useful things, chief cook & bottle washer. Done a bit of barmaiding too, and am keen on growing, preserving, fermenting & baking.

I also keep a few backyard chickens, aged from 8 down to 18months. It's never easy to introduce new birds; I tend to bring them in as day-old chicks & let a broody bantam raise them, which is usually trouble-free, but that rather depends on having a broody bantam! Otherwise you'll need to keep them separate but in view of each other for a week or two before removing the barriers; they'll still have a go at each other to establish the pecking order, but it's not as bad as just adding them into the shed at night when they're roosting, as we've had to do once or twice when fielding homeless chooks all unprepared. Good luck!

Unfortunately we don't have the space or equipment to keep them separate for that length of time. We are thinking introduce 2 more so the numbers are even on both sides and get that blue stuff in in case there is any serious pecking going on. When we got our original 4 chooks at POL there was some argy bargy getting things sorted for the first few weeks then it settled down, is the fighting any worst than that? And is the best way to keep the newbies separate till bedtime then shove them in the coop at night, so they all wake up together?

  • Heads up, Preppers.....

The lovely, gorgeous (sadly now married:o:o) Ben Fogle, star of the original island escape living programme 'Castaway' starts a new prog tonight on Ch4 where he goes to live with a family in New Zealand who are hunter-gatherers.
Might be worth a peek...... (if only to drool over Ben)!!!!

  • For anyone looking for more books on grow-your-own type stuff, I've spotted that the Book People website https://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/ has free delivery until midnight. Have a look at the gardening and self-sufficiency sections (under lifestyle). I don't have any personal interest in this, but I got a couple of prepperish books from them recently including Self Sufficiency by Liz Wright which I think is a great book for dreaming and planning...
Looking now for a new smallish fruit tree to put in a large pot that is being vacated by a lemon tree which I thought was worth a try but the long winter was too much for it
