*emerges from a pile of boxes*
well it now officially needs to warm up as I just found a box unlabelled containing 6 bottles of salad cream with Augusts date..I can't eat salad while it's snowing:eek:

Elaine I don't think your list is bad at all a real good start I reckon well done.

Do you tend to eat a lot of regular meals? If so then if you work from there it'll give you an idea of how much to store.
i.e I use two loaves a day nearly I home baked and 1 shop bought so if the SHTF for one months supply of bread I would need
    600g yeast
    600g salt
    bottle of olive oil
    180g butter
    and 30kg of flour!

that or put the kids on rations...:rotfl:

Be aware of whether your neighbours can see what you're up to, especially when it comes to "harvesting" your living meat storage. Rabbits may scream if this is done wrong/too slow.

Only because he told me...I discovered a neighbour who said that he has rabbits for food and kills/skins them. I never knew and have never heard anything. Then again there is a house between mine and his...

Trust me Pop, if he was doing it wrong you'd hear it, when I was little 1 of the uncle's kept rabbit's for food and he was showing an older cousin how to do it, coz got it wrong and the whole street[a cul de sac of 30] came out to see what was happening!

My goodness Elaine! Have you got cooking oil, tea and coffee?
More importantly you missed out the chocolate and alcohol!

I'm not a big drinker and to be honest now heating, food and keeping a roof over my is my priority but I have so much alcohol here to get through(even champagne)never bought before and likely as not never again. That was going to be to celebrate Mum's Birthday as a little surprise but she never got the chance to have it:(

I'm not paying attention to dates on the booze and thinking along the lines of best before dates which I often ignore...only not so sure about advocat and baileys whisky. Can't really see wine, vodka, rum, brandy, whisky etc...going off.

I always have lots of tea, coffee, would like more chocolate but again weigh the price up against other things...I suppose my treats against booze and sweets are the few trips I have had to the theatre. Something has to go. Even they could stop the way things are going.

I have said elsewhere on MSE I am debating whether to let the TV liicense go for the amount of TV I watch(has to be paid on April 30th)and whether to watch on the net as catch up.

Also said elsewhere but it might be missed if you don't look at other threads this story broke today...so when you prep and cut back on what you spend...

As for the rabbits, I have a feeling in his past my neighbour was a country boy so has probably brought those skills with him.

I'd like to bake my own bread and may again either when the oven is on for other reasons so as to not waste energy etc...but you know when we say put bread in the freezer to make it last...

I find whatever I buy lasts me ages and rarely goes mouldy even when not in the freezer. I still have 4 slices of an instore bloomer loaf purchased on March 21st and it is still neither mouldy or stale.

I have no idea why and the same is true of virtually any bread or rolls I buy. I can only assume it has something to do with the house not being very warm and the room my food store is in is pretty cold.

Or it could be to do with the preservatives in it.
Personally I always worry when things last too long. Call me paranoid but I've been known to throw 'everlasting' fruit away!
In comparison home made bread seems to go 'stale' quite quickly. That's because it is made differently plus it doesn't have the additives (though it is still wonderful when toasted). That's why I make bread rolls/baps etc instead of loaves. Easy to freeze and use as necessary. Plus the oven isn't on as long.

Pops you should have a go hun 'tis simple :D I usually get it going after the boys are off to school then by the time I get back from walking Rosie it's ready for knocking back. You can do any size loaf you like too or rolls that way you get less waste.

waves at Craigy are you thawing out yet?

Well my food storage is looking a bit tidier now and everything has labels at last. Found a couple of things I'm running 'low' on so need to add them to my shopping list for when they're on sale..nothing urgent fortunately.

Any updates on the news Pineapple OH has dozed off cuddling the remote watching Apollo 13 again :rotfl:

RJ thanks for all the linkies. This is exactly my train of thought. I'm getting an allotment, and hopefully a Forest Garden, going for fruit and veg and I have a couple of chicks, but have pondered rabbits and quail too. The problem is I have a tiny yard and can't keep livestock at the Lottie. I could probably keep some livestock at my landshare garden (Forest Garden) but it's on a steep slope and not very accessible in bad weather so not really practical. So it's back to my diddy yard, I'm already making plans to fence off the whole of the end (about 12' x 12') and get more chicks and maybe a couple of ducks in there. I could get a couple of hutches down the side return, one for rabbit and one for quail and I did have a brief nosey at aquaponics but the fish mostly recommended - tilapia - don't survive cold temperatures, so no good for uk. Might have to do more research as I noticed the book was a uk version.
My crazy doggie isn't allowed out in the yard so she'd not be a problem. I take her up to the park at the top of the road several times a day so she's not missing out ;).
Have been up to my Landshare garden today, collecting more leaves for leaf mold and sorting out some firewood, some of the smaller branches I lopped off last winter are dried out enough to burn and there are some older too, I'm hoping to be able to manage with what's there and not have to buy another load yet!

Take care all and try to keep upbeat people. It seems like the S is indeed HTF for many people now and it's at times like these when ordinary people are distracted that TPTB try to get away with even more extreme antics. Anyone seen 'The Shock Doctrine'?
