    Hello everyone
Sorry I can't remember who asked, but I said I'd let you know about the Power Traveller Explorer I bought after I'd tried it out.
    So here goes:
I'm not very impressed. I wanted to hang it on my rucsac so it could charge while I was walking. However there was no way to hang it securely and be sure the solar panels stayed connected to the battery. Also the connection between the battery & my phone was flaky. So it doesn't do the job I wanted it for, so I'll be trying to return it tomorrow. Sad cos it was the solar power aspect that sold it to me, but the poor connections made it unreliable and therefore unusable.
    HTH someone

  • Been MIA for a while what with one thing and another plus my niece 25 has just been diagnosed with Lymphoma and she has two small children :(

Well it looks like there are a lot of protest marches on the cards tomorrow so we she see if it is reported on our news. This government are lower than vermin and Monday might just be the catalyst for things to blow in this country, everywhere you go it feels like you are in a pressure cooker that is about to go bang.

I am lucky that DH is of the same mindset as me and has been actively pushing for us to prep more
He wants me to do another real seeds order, because he really doesn't like the prospect of eating Monsanto Frankenfoods.

Sorry the job didn't work out for you wondercollie, hopefully something better will come along soon, these things usually pop out of the blue when you least expect it x

Right I am off to brush my teggies and then to bed.

    Sweet dreams all x
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Having said that, I've know people to can their own salmon after a really good fishing trip. Glass jars of the suff and I'm pretty sure they use the water bath method.

OOOh dicing with death there :( Fish has the longest processing time of any food.
In the olden days everything was water bathed for hours on end to make it safe. Not sure how nutritious it was but at least you would not starve.

Until recently Pineapple thought that 'canning' involved putting things in cans. No seriously! Should it not be called 'jarring'?

I think it should be called jarring too.
Apparently they did and some still do use real cans but the equipment is expensive and I would think the cans themselves are now with the price of metal.

Another thing is that glass jars are re-useable with just a new flat each time. I am going to buy some flats from America when I have used up what I have.

I emailed Kilner and they confirmed that their lids don't contain any BPA. But it still seems quite wasteful to use a whole new metal disc each time. I was tempted by the Tattler reusable lids which would fit Kilner jars. And then I thought - Hang on, why not just use the Le Parfait type jars with a glass lid and wire closure then you only need a new rubber seal each time. Even though the Euro is quite strong against the pound at the moment, it's quite cheap to stock up on the rubber seals in a French supermarket when we go on holiday
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Had a lovely evening watching the box quite enjoyed Revolution but why did they have to kill old C.Thomas Howell I like him :p

Walking Dead was sad tho *sob*

OH has now pinched the remote so I can't watch Doomsday preppers yet boo..

Did anyone catch Naked Ed on the desert island I quite enjoyed that apart from the odd rant when it took him so long to make fire etc :o

ooh jars I have a slight obsession with nice jars lol
Over the years I've amassed a small collection but I love the two piece lids on the kilner/kerr jars.
I keep an eye on Amazon warehouse for cheap sets and got loads last year for around £1.50 a pack cos the box was torn or dented.

I buy my widemouth ones from the states usually via ebay.

Can't wait for my new pint jars to arrive I'm easily pleased :rotfl:

ETA Butterfly just spotted your news so sorry to hear that what a shock for you all :(

I have built up a big collection of kilner and other glass jars over the years. It started with using them for my plum brandy - but these days glass is my preferred storage option. I read that it's not just BPA we should be concerned about in plastics.:(
    http://www.breastcancerfund.org/clear-science/chemicals-linked-to-breast-cancer/plastics/
It appears we are surrounded by toxic products including the 'off gassing' from things like new carpets.
    http://www.everydayhealth.com/health-report/allergy/off-gas.aspx
Heck even our paper towels and loo paper are suspect!
    http://www.neutralcleaning.com/Toxic%20Hazardous.htm
    And google toxic wet wipes.
    Where does it end? :(
Back to kilner jars, I've never replaced a seal yet. Are we supposed to?
I find that if anything goes - it's the wire round the lid which sometimes gets out of shape.
  • Hi,
just seen a link to this:

I don't have a Santander UK account, but later where he talks about getting out of sterling, is scary.

    I'm not ready....

Thank you for that, Rosemary Jane, my business account is with S&ntander... not that it contains very much, but that's not the point, it's all about trust. Or was...
